A review of the Sony KDL-40Z5800U Freesat LCD TV

The new 5800 series from Sony has a slender and stylish design with a depth of only 8.6cm making it suitable for wall mounting. The stand is solid although a bit on the boring side, the KDL-40Z5800 isn't the most unique design and blends in to a world of black framed LCD's with no imagination. However, the frame is thin and giving it a super slim appearance.

Features
The Sony KDL-40Z5800 LCD TV has a very impressive list of features all to provide you with the ultimate viewing experience. The Full HD 1080 resolution works alongside the 200Hz Motionflow with IB (image blur) reduction to deliver a smooth detailed, blur free image. The Bravia Engine 3 adds extra detail and keep things looking real while Live Colour Creation ensures colours are vibrant and sharp. There is a dynamic contrast ratio of 100,000:1 for richer black levels, DLNA connectivity for home networking, Applicast offers Live RSS feeds providing information such as news, weather and sport for example. There are four HDMI connections, a USB media player, Bravia Sync, Scene Select and Picture Frame Mode. There are also some great Eco features such as the Energy Saving Switch which cuts power to zero on standby and Eco settings which reduce power consumption. Freesat is also on board.
Performance
As soon as you set-up the Sony KDL-40Z5800 LCD TV and switch it on, the image that greets you is one that is quite simple breathtaking. Minimal adjustments are required and the image is easily one of the best we have ever seen on an LCD TV. We checked out the Freesat channels as well and HD channels and all images were outstanding. Every image was sharp, vibrant, extremely detailed and life-like. Standard definition was displayed equally as well. Connection is generous on the KDL-40Z5800 and creates many options for hooking up your Blu-ray player, Nintendo Wii and Home Theatre System for example. The DLNA connection works really well and provides up to date information at the touch of a button and the online screen is easy to navigate and intuitive. As with many LCD's from Sony, the sound seems to have missed their attention and lacks any kind of life.
Overall Opinion
The Sony KDL-40Z5800 provides a stunning viewing experience with fantastic features too. The sound aspect does let it down but as most have a home theatre system these days, its probably not a major concern. The images more than make up for it!
