A review of the Panasonic TX-P50S10 Plasma TV

The design of the S10 Plasma TV range is not the most innovative and classy of TV's but its solid and strong and stands proud with a jet black frame and chunky stand. This TV will not be toppling over in a hurry. Its a shame the design hasn't received more attention for a new release from Panasonic as some of the NeoPDP range has. And in competition with rivals, this model looks kind of sheepish and a bit ashamed of itself. We can only hope that the features and performance make up for it.

Features
Firstly, Panasonic have included a Full HD screen with a dynamic contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 in order to deliver spectacular images along with a 400Hz picture processing technology which actively reduces image judder with 900 lines of resolution creating a smooth and sharp motion. The Intelligent Frame Creation and V-Real Pro 3 engine activates these technologies and enables them to work together to deliver the best possible image. Panasonic have also included the Real Black Drive system which ensures that you receive the deepest and most detailed blacks. An SD card slot and the ability to play AVCHD video files has been included to offer extra flexibility and there are 3 HDMI outputs which is slightly disappointing for a new TV of this size. There is built-in Freeview but no Freesat on this model.
Performance
The overall operation of the Panasonic TX-P50S10 was very straight forward and we have seen some much more complex menu systems compared to this one and it was simple to hook up too. We know it is a big TV, but due to its thick black frame it appears to be massive when placed in a room and would look better in a bigger more proportioned room. The images displayed were of a high standard and the technology on board evidently works hard to produce a stunning image. Colours were good too, but did slightly falter around the edges and sometimes appeared darker around the edge and got brighter towards the centre. This seemed to be the case on a dark scene and more than likely only noticeable to a trained eye. Judder was minimal, although not completely eliminated. Some fast moving scenes showed slight blur but not enough to complain about, but in comparison to Panasonic's NeoPDP range it is visible.
Overall Opinion
We like the Panasonic Plasma TV due to its solid design, which could have been a bit more imaginative, its great features and simplicity of use. It is an entry level model so miracles should not be expected but its a good price for a 50" Plasma TV.
