The iRiver E100 MP3 Player is an attractive piece of kit from first glance, but when you get to hold it and look a little more closely, it is evidentally made from cheap plastic and bears no solid materials whatsoever. However, it feels solid in your hand and looks aren't everything, the iRiver E100 has a 2.4" screen which is good and bright and minimal controls which are also a bonus.
Features
The E100 offers features such as sound enhancers to provide you with a sound which is as near to teh original as possible. This is done by supporting the codec for FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) files along with a variety of codec for music files in the form of MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG. SRS WOW HD sound is also included to provide the listener with a richer sound. Video quality is seamless and shown at 30fps supporting MPEG 4 SP, WMV9 and XVID SP. Images can also be viewed and saved as JPEG, BMP, PNG and GIF and images can be played with music to create a personal soundtrack. Also on board is an integrated voice recorder, FM radio, dual speakers and fast USB 2.0 transfers.
Performance
This is where the iRiver blows the Apple iPod Nano out of the water, as the sound is amazing in comparison. The Nano lacks a certain level of detail in its sound whereas the iRiver E100 retains that detail throughout a number of different tracks chosen. A reasonable price tag is stuck tho this model and in the sound department it works well but as we said the design really does let it down. The Sandisk Sansa View is probably slightly better and the Creative Zen and iPod Nano are on par. The menu functions were very easy to navigate and the on-screen graphics are good and pleasurable to use.
Overall Opinion
The iRiver E100 MP3 Player provides a very impressive sound, but it is a shame that a little more attention wsn't made on the design as it really does let it down.
