A review of the Apple iPod Classic MP3 Player

The new iPod Classic will store so much of your favourite music with either 80GB or 160GB hard drive, that picking and choosing which tracks you store is a thing of the past. The newly updated Apple offspring is better and smarter than ever before and with such a reasonable price tag, it can do no wrong.

Design

The design was good before with its predecessor the Apple iPod Video, a good size to hold and it stood out in a crowd with its great sized screen, but now Apple have improved it even more with a more scuff resistant finish and a variation in size. The finish is now a matte black powder coating on the front and on the click wheel, where it used to be glossy black and highly scratch-able. The back is still reflective silver. The new dimensions are 103.5mm x 61.8mm x 10.5mm and weighs 140g.

Features

CoverFlow is making an appearance on all of the new iPods and very welcome it is too. Making things a bit more interesting when looking for your tracks, you can flick through all of your album covers and have it on display when your music is playing. It also flips so you can see the song list on the reverse. A different feature is the menu structure. It is now split in half down the middle and displays the menu list down the left side and the ‘now playing’ album cover on the right. Some addictive new games are included, one called iQuiz, which quizzes you on your music collection, clever. Vortex and Klondike are the other gaming options which look great on the colour screen and more can be downloaded from the iTunes store. The iPod Classic plays the same MP3’s, AAC’s, Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF music files etc as the iPod Video. There are no new additions to the menu, however there are few shifts.

Performance
Video playback is awesome and totally unchanged from the iPod Video. A really bright clear and smooth video screen and high quality images are displayed brilliantly.
To us, the sound quality is just the same as before, which was extremely good and clear. CoverFlow works really well apart from being a bit sluggish if you spin the wheel a bit too fast for it to catch up. The Colours are displayed really well and it really livens the screen and makes it a more interesting tool. Charging the classic up takes around 4 hours and from this charge the 80GB model will provide you with around 30 hours of music playback and around 5 hours of video, while the 160GB model will pump out 40 hours of music playback and video playback for 7 hours.
Overall Opinion
With superb sound and stunning picture quality, the iPod Classic will not disappoint. Finally, an MP3 player that will allow you cart your entire music collection around with you and let you see it all on screen. What pleasure! The 80GB model will set you back £159 and £229 for the 160GB version.
