37x3030 on test

My new Tosh 37X3030 gives a cracking HD picture on my sky HD box. (And my laptop can drive it natively at 1920*1080x60p via DVI though I had to sit closer to read the tiny but perfect text of the desktop icons.) It does show how soft SD is. The SD stuff down converted from HD looks OK if a little soft as does DVD, but my regional news prog looks like someone smeared vaseline on the lens. I'm glad I didn't buy a bigger set it would be unbearable to watch some SD programmes. It did take me quite a while to tweak most of the picture twiddles out to get a decent picture from it. But I'm fairly happy with the result. I can see the finest 1 pixel gratings on the SKY HD 1080i test card clearly, and a near perfect greyscale and poke you in the eye clear colourimetry and perfect exact scan framing. ( A better gamma tweak might be good though as fine detail in the blacks can be lost!) The sound quality is the TV's weak area it performed poorly on male newsreaders voices switching off the 'bass boost' made it listenable but too dull for action movies.
ProsCons
exact scan 1920x1080p capable. Adjustable to give excellent picture quality. 2xHDMI 2*SCART (1 RGB) key picture processing features optimisable on individual inputs. 2m HD optimum viewing distance bass sound performance

Toshiba 37X3030D LCD TV Review

They seem to be going down very well and the new Toshiba range has been very well accepted into the LCD HDTV world. With their budget pricing structure and exceptional picture quality, we can see why. The Toshiba 37X3030D LCD HDTV is one of the best of the new bunch.

Design

The glossy look is all the rage at the moment when it comes to an LCD TV and Toshiba have shared the trend across the new range and we are very glad they did. These screens will instantly update and enhance any living space with its gracious shiny-ness.
Features
We were instantly drawn to check out the connectivity possibilities on the 37” X3030D and we were pleased but not overwhelmed with what we were greeted, an average 2 HDMI’s and 2 SCART’s, Composite input, Component input, PC input and built-in Freeview and analogue receivers, thereis no side mounted HDMI on the 37x3030d which is a shame. The option to enable the DNR (Digital Noise Reduction) feature was a pleasant surprise as when this is activated any picture noise present will be significantly reduced and images will be cleaned to ensure you only receive the very best images possible with this superb technology. Other impressive features include Active Backlight Control (for improved blacks), MPEG noise reduction (for improved image contrast), 2x 25w speakers with SRS TRuSurround XT Technology, Active Vision LCD, Real Speed Progressive technology. So it’s all there apart from that all important third HDMI port which would have instantly raised the position of the Toshiba 37X3030D.
Performance
The Toshiba ‘X’ series models have Full HD resolution of 1920x1080 which sets them way in front of the previous entry level ‘C’ range that Toshiba are so proud of, and should be too. With the ever-growing HD market, 1080p sources are more available making the Full HD models more sought after. With this in mind, when we switched on the Toshiba 37X3030D and hooked up our HD DVD Player and put in a HD DVD, we waited with baited breath for impressive results. It was worth the 3 second wait, as colours were amazingly bright and sharp and with the DNR feature activated noise was dramatically reduced. Images were so realistic and life-like and dark scenes were detailed extremely well and sound was just as impressive. The audio provided us with some awesome sound effects which we just had to listen to over again to capture the clarity. On a more negative note, the Freeview images we achieved were not so great, but we came to the conclusion that the Full HD larger screens are designed for HD movies and sources such as Sky HD TV.
Overall Opinion

The Toshiba LCD HDTV has many impressive features that compliment the images received superbly. Images are clear, sharp and very bright with amazing natural tones and blacks are displayed with real detail and depth. Connectivity is ok, but as we said, a third side mounted HDMI would be better, however the ‘X Elite’ (X3530DB) or ‘Z’ (Z3030DB) series will provide this if you have a bit more cash to splash.
