A review of the Canon Powershot A710 IS digital camera
Sturdy seems to be the name of the game across the Powershot range and the Canon Powershot A710 IS is no exception to the rule. Canon have produced many great features with these offspring and we are sure that the A710 IS will follow suit. Design |
As we said this is a very sturdy and chunky digital camera and you certainly know it’s in your pocket as it weighs it down with a hefty 210g. The dimensions are not so compact either at 97.5mm (w) x 66.5mm (h) x 41.2mm (d) but sometimes we feel it is better to have a more robust and solid model in your mitt. It has an average 2.5in LCD screen which dominates the rear with the viewfinder above it and there is a generous sized d-panel and a few shortcut buttons that are also a nice size rather than tiny like on some models we have tested recently. There is also a switch to take you from shooting mode to playback. On the top, there is the shutter release button and a dial which allows you to move through the cameras shooting options. There is a very nice rubber grip material down the right hand side and the A710 IS has a barrel to hold onto. A plastic flap covers the USB connection and the battery and media card compartment is nicely hidden on the underside.
Features
There is 7.1 mega pixels to contend with and a 6x optical zoom with optical Image Stabiliser which is of course great for those of us with a shaky hand to gain crisp shots. There is a fully automatic mode and a generous selection of 13 scene modes including Landscape, Night Scene, Stitch Assist, Movie, Special Scene (Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Indoor, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Underwater, Colour Accent, Colour Swap). Canon have moved on from the older USB 1.1 /2.0 Full Speed Standard to the much swifter USB 2.0 High Speed Interface with the A710 IS thus allowing really quick printing of your snaps without having to use the computer at all you can just make use of the PictBridge enabled printer with the same USB connection. The optical viewfinder is quite important in our eyes and we think that by keeping it in the design with the Canon Powershot A710 IS it allows you to save on batteries and turn off the LCD display and use it in certain situations and in low lighting it can also be a welcome option.
Performance
Start-up and shutdown are quick and the menu option you need is quickly at hand too, especially with the handy shortcut buttons. The Canon A710 has enough megapixels for excellent resolution in enlargements without risking much image noise. The A710's excellent 6x zoom is impressive and some high quality shots were achieved. The colours were accurate and detail was great. As with its predecessor the Canon Powershot A710 IS takes two AA batteries, which adds to its weight, but we would suggest you invest in a battery charger as they don’t last very long, if you are at a party for example you will need them to last much longer than they do. The continuous shooting mode is quite good although not quite as quick as its aforementioned predecessor. An overall good performer.
What's In The Box?
16MB Secure Digital card, Two AA alkaline batteries, Wrist strap, USB cable, A/V cable, CD-ROM featuring Canon Digital Camera Solution, Apple QuickTime, and drivers 32 page basic manual + 137 page advanced manual.
Overall Opinion
We think that the range of features available make this Canon Powershot A710 IS digital camera a real winner with beginners. The price tag is very reasonable also. |
