 PURE ONE DAB RADIO REVIEW

Once upon a time you'd pay a high price to buy a digital radio.  And for the past few years DAB radios have held their price at around the £100 mark.  Not any more.  Pretty in pink, the Pure Digital One not only looks great in shocking pink (don't worry, you can get them in white and black if this is too much for you) but works as well as any of the other DABs on the market and is only £50, officially making it the cheapest DAB around.  The One, truly is the chosen one - with good sound, 20 presets, a timer and an FM option, it's a great purchase if you're looking for a cheap DAB.

 Design
The One is so light you could pick it up with two fingers.  The plastic casing comes in shocking pink, clinical white and black.  There's a single speaker on the left and a simple uncomplicated design on the right with the main functions circling a large chrome tuner/volume control which sits on the right of the box.

Setup/Installation
Like any other DAB radio the One is easy to tune. Once you've switched it on the machine does its business and tunes up the channels - make sure the aerial is extended to pick up the best signal though.

Features
This is your basic - no-frills radio.  But having said that it's got everything you really need.  Yes, there's a lack of the electronic programme guide which can be found on the more modern models but you've still got a screen that gives you the cut-down version including information on the channel and who the presenter is.  There's also no recording function like in the Bug but how many programmes do you really want to record?
What it has got is a section for six batteries making it totally portable and ideal for the garden (you can even buy a pack of rechargeable ones from Pure to make sure you're being environmentally aware).  There's also great FM and DAB radio signal, you get 20 preset buttons, a kitchen and sleeper timer and the ability to upgrade functions through the USB port on the side of the radio.

Performance
We're going to mention the price again, purely because for £50 this is a brilliant radio.  Sound from the one speaker was of a pretty good standard and the volume went up to a decent level too.  The timer worked well meaning you could use it at night to listen to the shipping forecast and know it will switch off before the morning.  The One guzzles through batteries but then so do other portable DABs on the market.  As with all DABs the aerial needs to be up properly otherwise reception can be distorted at times - and what happens is rather than going fuzzy, with a digital radio you just completely lose signal. But we had ours next to lots of electrical equipment and it still worked well.   .

What's In The Box?
A digital radio and power cable.

Overall Opinion
The Pure Digital One DAB/FM digital radio is a basic DAB that does what it says on the tin - provides good digital reception as well as being able to flick over to FM. For the price it's got everything you need from a radio and even as a bog standard digital radio it will compete with most kitchen radios.

ProsCons
Very cheap for a DAB radio, moves away from traditional wooden look with its plastic casing, decent sound. Two year warrantly and technical support. It doesn't have EPG or recording functions but for the price you don't mind.
