Reviews

Samsung LE32R74BDX - didn't last a week in our house.

This TV is fantastic to look at. The gloss black finish is as good as any TV on the market, but is a big dust magnet, leave the enclosed cleaning cloth to hand, you will need it a lot. Performance wise, this set fails to deliver on Low Def pictures as we havnt got Sky HDTV yet. Pictures:Generally okay, but if watching something like the intro the news, MTV or other programmes where there are moving light levels or where the screen fades in from black then the brightness level changes are not smooth. It seems as though it cannot handle smooth changes and makes the changes in steps. Even watching the intro to the BBC news was a pain the arse. Sound:Lacking in any depth, particuarly on the bass. Dont be fooled by the fancy sounding SRS Trusound, it just sounds like a normal 2 speaker TV set - if you want anything sounding okay, go for a TV with more than 2 speakers or a home cinema set. Do not buy this TV - it is rubbish! We sent ours back with 7 days - distance selling regs

Oh MY GOD!

Ok... I'm a complete newbie to Hdtv and everything, but over the last few weeks I've been hitting as many websites as possible to do my research...and finally I ended up purchasing this little beauty. I have to say right now...believe the hype! High Definition is absolutely incredible. For my xbox 360 it's just blown every game out of the screen! The detail is truly immense, and the games are just outstanding to look at. The TV itself is a great picture, one of the best I've seen - incredible contrast and clarity you've never witnessed before. The Digital freeview inbuilt is also GREAT quality - Even though we are only using a little plug-in aerial. It even picked up loads more channels than our seperate digital freeviewer that we were using before! GET IT! GET IT! GET IT! Ps. Dont believe all the crud you read about poor sound...to the untrained ear, i think the sound quality is great :)
ProsCons
Pretty Much Everything... o Looks Great o Amazing Picture o Great Sound o Big o Reeks of Quality o Just...outstandingOnly poor thing is a thing with all of these good new tvs - older films and documentaries are really shown up on their poor quality. But that's hardly the tvs fault.

Samsung LE32R74BDX

'Man that’s a good looking TV' were the first words uttered from my mouth. I set up the TV without getting my mitts all over the glossy side panels, plugged it in, read some of the manual before getting too giddy and just turned it on. It boots up, tunes itself in and shows you what its packing! Wow what a picture, the colour just pours out of the screen. Even in standard definition I feel like I have been missing so much with previous TV's, why has simple things like text been so unclear until now? The picture is so clear and sharp. As with most flat panel TV's the sound is rubbish but isn't noticeable until you plug in surround sound. The time has come to plug in the Xbox 360 and to put it simply its awesome. I can't possibly put into words the difference a good telly does to the signal from this machine. My Xbox 360 came with some HD videos and to see the TV in full HD is amazing. To put it simply, I love this TV! For the price (£630) I would point you towards this television.
ProsCons
Standard definition picture. High definition picture. The styling is amazing.Speaker output is a bit naff. The glossy side panels seem to attract a lot of dust, is that just me? Probably, I do have two rather large hairy dogs!

Pleasure to watch Outstanding

I plugged in my PS2 and put the LCD into gaming mode the picture is fantastic. I connected up the TV aerial into the back of the LCD it automatically tuned in the channels using the integrated freeview. The video review I find misleading. I have seen other LCD TVs and you can see tiny squares but this TV is sharp and has an excellent picture. DVD picture quality is also excellent not like the review says. I wonder what DVD player and cables they used. The pictures are bright clean crisp and clear. Blacks and Colours are very good. I do use higher graded cables between equipment so it gives me the best picture I can get for the budget I have. DVD is a Limit Dvd800 Tuned by Cyrus with an Ixos scart cable. A Component cable or HDMI setup should give a better over all pictures. PC picture is VERY sharp. HD Video clips from Microsoft and Apple the pictures incredible, amazing, stunning colours and detail no pixels out of place. 10/10 would buy another one tomorrow VERY PLEASED !!!

Take time with pic setup and results are impressive!

I have this TV set up in the lounge and the look is very impressive. I disagree with the Editors review, if you take the time to mess around with the picture settings, it can produce very impressive results, Do not just go with the Out of box settings!! In fact the picture is identical to my new Sony BRAVIA in the Front room. Inbuilt freeview is ok, but i would recommend using External freeview/sky from a Set top box with RGB scart. The pic from that blows the fuzzy inbuilt freeview out of the water. DVD should also be used on either S-Video, HDMI or Component RGB. Like with all equipment, take some time to set the screen up properly and you get a very good pic indeed. The image does suffer from a small amount of motion lag, This is not to do with the response time but the way the tv deals with interlaced video. Sound is feeble like all LCD screens due to depth, however a good home cinema system connected via the optical out gives impressive results.

ProsCons
Contrast & Black level. Overall Picture quality on SD content. HD Picture is very deep and impressive. Good with low quality signals compared to other LCD's Inbuilt Sound. Skin tones on SD signal Motion lag on SD signal

Samsung LE32R74BDX 32in HDTV-Ready Television

Everytime we clap eyes on a good looking flatscreen we are excited to see if the brains are as good so we put the Samsung LE32R74BDX LCD TV to the test. We were aware that it's only an entry level HDTV but we knew to keep an open mind as the market now holds so many surprises. As soon as we unpacked the main screen we knew it was a looker. The sleek, piano black surround and matching oval stand was easy to fix together (a simple matter of two screws) and there it stood - in all it's glory. We were so impressed - until - I noticed a collection of fingerprints, so I quickly grabbed the cloth (that came in the box) to budge them and unfortunately they were not budging, and still haven't. Not only is there the fingerprint problem, after getting a few other opinions we decided that the piano black surround is far too glossy. It was causing heaps of reflection and became distracting after a while. So, our advice would be to take it out of the box wearing gloves and mount it 8 foot of the floor if you've own ice-cream-clad children. All connections are located at the back and on the left hand side keeping in line with the smart design which is good. The stand allows the screen to swivel very smoothly indeed and is in good proportion, as sometimes the screen looks like it is teetering on top.

Setup/Installation
After sitting and staring in awe for a good ten minutes we plugged it into the mains and got our hands on the extensive remote control. The set-up process took about five minutes as the TV does it all for you. It tunes the channels using the auto-programming setting on the menu. We were very impressed by how hassle-free it was. When the menu first popped up we were disappointed that they were central but they are slightly opaque, allowing you to see the picture.

Features
Like all good TVs, the LE32R74BD has a very clever image engine, Samsung has provided the Digital Natural Image Engine alongside a 10-bit processor. It boasts a 1366x768 resolution and a 5000:1 image contrast ratio which offers an impressive show. We like the 178 degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles making it perfect if you do opt to wall mount it away from the kids. Connections are good, it has a two scarts, only one is RGB-enabled though, alongside a component connection, HDMI and a HDCP. The LE32R74BD is great as it's Sky HD compatible, and to please the majority of people, it has PC input too. It has in-built FreeView and picture-in-picture (p.i.p) for those nights when you can't be bothered arguing over who watches Eastenders and who watches the footy. Our favourite feature was the game mode which improves the colour quality, it worked perfectly with the Xbox 360.

Performance
Unfortunately the LE32R74BD fails to perform as well as it looks. The FreeView performance was definitely the best compared to watching standard material and a DVD. To put it through its paces we decided on Oceans Eleven - it wasn't good. Even on a top-of-the-range Panasonic DVD player, the motion pictures were blurred, this didn't surprise us though if the still pictures were anything to go by. We even did a bit of eye-rubbing to see if we were mistaken by human error (no such look Samsung!). If you walk back ten paces it does improve but who wants to sit that far away? The menu gives you a large handful of strange colour enhancing options, which we wouldn't advise you use as they only made the rather tanned George Clooney look like E.T when he was on his way out. Colours on the normal setting are very vibrant, no problems there at all. Sound quality is respectable, lots of bass in action scenes and dialogue was clear with all sources.

What's In The Box?
remote control, power cord, stand screws, swivel stand, cleaning cloth, TV, instructions

Overall Opinion
For an entry-level HDTV the Samsung LE32R74BDX is putting on an average show. It's selling point is the in-built freeview but if you have a sky -dish already installed I would advise you shop around the other entry level HDTVs brands like Panasonic, LG and Sony Bravia 2nd Generation to get a better deal.
