Samsung LCD 26" TV LE26R74BDX & barge poles

Bought the TV in January 2007. Picture quality excellent sound quality poor. Set only lasted until October 2008 when it crashed. Cost to repair incl diagnostic check £284.90 of which parts quoted at £184.90. They only give 1 year warranty for a set that cost £499.97. Conclusion do not buy a Samsung. Currently Sony offering 3 year warranty!

NO PRIZES FOR SOUND QUALITY

I've just had a Samsung-approved engineer to look at my new TV as I was convinced there was a fault with the sound. Apparently there wasn't and he suggested I invest in a surround-sound system. Shame on you Samsung - you've produced an otherwise excellent product but have chosen to lift the speakers from a 1960's transistor radio.

Samsung LE26R74BDX LCD HDTV review

Design

Following the steps of its big brothers the LE32R74BDX, the LE37R74BDX and the LE40R74BDX, the Samsung LE26R74BDX has the same sleek and stylish design. It comes with a glossy black surround and matching stand that it really makes it stand out in your living room. At first sight, the Samsung LE26R74BDX looks impressive and the glossy finish really says: “quality design”. The problems come as soon as you touch it. The glossy finish is an absolute finger print magnet so make sure you wear gloves when you install it.
The other disadvantage of the glossy finish is the fact that reflects light like if it was a mirror, causing constant distractions while you try to enjoy watching a movie.
The TVs ingenious swivel stand moves 20 degrees to the left or to the right giving users the ultimate flexibility in positioning the TV in their house. We were quite impressed by how smooth the swivel mechanism works.
All the connections are situated on the back and on the left hand side of the TV, allowing for wall mounting.

Setup/Installation
The Samsung LE26R74BDX has minimal installation so you can start enjoying it straight after you have unpacked it. Plug it to the mains, connect TV source and let the clever LE26R74BDX do the rest. It tunes the channels using the auto-programming setting that you will find in the menu and you will be watching TV in less than 5 minutes.
Features
The list of features on the Samsung LE26R74BDX is very long indeed, although you will find that newer LCD TVs have more and better features. The Samsung LE26R74BDX has a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels, a response time of 8ms and a contrast ratio of only 3000:1, which is a bit of a disappointment. Samsung has incorporated their Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) on this HD LCD TV, which is supposed to provide crystal clear images. In order to enhance picture quality, the LE26R74BDX has a 12.8 billion colour display, which produces pictures with extremely vivid colours and great depth in all environments. Connections are good. It has 2 scarts, 1 HDMI, 1 component, 1 composite and 1 S-video. It also has a PC connection, allowing it to function as a high-resolution PC monitor. Other features include SRS TruSurround XT, provided by hidden bar type speakers.
Performance
Well, if we have to be honest (and we are), the Samsung LE26R74BDX did not perform as well as we were expecting. We were hoping that the image produced by this sleek LCD TV would be incredible, but that was not the case. Colours were rich and vibrant, but the picture when watching a DVD was a bit blurred. HD content is a different story. When playing back the HD demo we have in the office, the Samsung LE26R74BDX really showed its full potential. No blurred pictures and the black levels were impressive. But the thing that disappointed us the most was the sound quality. It was thin with not much power, but I guess that’s why you have home theatre speaker systems in the market…
Overall Opinion
The Samsung LE26R74BDX is a stylish 26-inch LCD HDTV that would look great in any living room. Performance could be better and the price could be a bit lower, but as new LCD TVs are released, the price of the LE26R74BDX will drop in the next few months.

I BROUGHT THIS TV FROM CURRYS. I BROUGHT THIS WITH SAMSUNG SURRROUND SOUND SPEAKERS. YOU WILL NEED THIS AS THE SPEAKERS ARE OK BUT IF YOU LIKE GOOD SURROUND SOUND THEN DONT RELY ON THEM. THIS TV HAS AN EXCELLENT PICTURE QUALITY WHEN I FIRST TURNED IT ON I WAS SUPRISED ON HOW BRIGHT AND CLEAR THE IMAGE WAS. THIS TV IS VERY GOOD AND I WOULD BUY ANOTHER ONE IF I NEEEDED TO. WELL RECOMENDED FOR XBOX 360

Nice looking TV

I bought this TV from Argos back in May and was initially very happy. The TV started making a tinny/rattling noise one month later. When the guarantee eventually turned up I sent it back to be repaired. It turned out that both the speakers had blown! It cam back from repair 2 weeks later and seemed fine until... one day on the same problem was back so looks like the speaker(s) have gone again. I think it's now time to replace it with a different make/model which is a shame as it's a really smart looking TV.

stylish and paying for itself

I bought the TV from comet through a link from unbeatable and they were excellant delivering the TV in 2 days. The TV itself looks really stylish especially mounted on the wall. The remote is easy to use, the picture quality is good although that is compared to my old Thompsom TV which was 9 nine years old. As the TV has a built in freeview box I have ditched NTL saving 25 pounds a month, so its pays for itself in 2 years (looking at it through my weird logic that is).

ProsCons
Very good lookingI struggled to get a wall bracket as the instructions don't tell you what to buy. I bought the wrong one and had to return it and get it swapped.
