Review of Samsung LE46M51B 46in LCD Television Review

Well, the best things are said to come in small packages, this could explain why the LE46M51B 46in LCD TV isn’t anything to get excited about. LCDs usually stay small and reasonably priced but Samsung defies convention with this 46in LCD which surprisingly remains reasonably priced. Samsung has risen to the challenge in terms of size but they seem to have struggled where quality is concerned.

Samsung LE32M51B LCD TV Review

Design

I’d say the LE46M51B is much of a muchness in the looks department, it doesn’t have anything that the majority of LCDs on the market don't possess. The polished black surround is smart with a silver strip at the bottom. Some say it is the best looking TV around but I’m disagreeing on this occasion.

Features
The LE46M51B has a 1366x768 native resolution which is a good start for such a large TV. The picture is boosted by Samsung’s digital natural image engine processing and the noise reduction option. Unfortunately this LCD lacks a digital tuner so you’ll need a separate external one if you want a decent picture. Our favourite feature is the brightness sensor which reacts to the light in the room by automatically adjusting the brightness of the picture. Very clever Samsung! It impressed us with the picture-in-picture tool which has many options that are fun to play around with. As far as features go, that’s your lot. Connectivity isn’t as thin on the ground luckily, you’ve only got 1 HDMI, why I ask? I wonder if these designers are awake, who wants just one HDMI these days? You’ll find 1 D-Sub PC input, a headphone jack, a component video, two scarts but only 1 is RGB-enabled and 1 composite video input.
Performance

The picture on the LE46M51B is as bright as an Oxford graduate compared to other LCD screens. I often find the colours a bit flat on plasmas, but not with this one. The colours are fully saturated giving a solid and intense picture. Black levels aren’t very impressive, dark scenes make it difficult to make out different objects, for this there is just no excuse. I also noticed that standard material looks very average too. It handled noise really badly and got even worse with fast motion scenes. The fast motion scenes made the colours slip slightly too which was disappointing. With HD material the level of quality really goes up a notch or two. Watching HDTV on the LE46M51B was such a pleasure, but then the audio let us down. The speakers are designed to be hidden, however, I don’t think they meant to drown out the sound at the same time. Dialogue was muffled and all other audio sounded rather flat.

Overall Opinion

We’re sorry Samsung but you just haven’t cut the mustard with the Samsung LE46M51B. Initially we thought it was a good price but after an hour of watching it took a downward plunge in our estimations. Better luck next time.

Samsung LE46M51

I have a 32" Toshiba LCD and am having Sky HD installed at the end of the month so wanted something a bit bigger that would show it at it's best. I saw the LE46M51 in Currys next to a 42" Panasonic and a 40" Sony Bravia LCD- All were showing an HD preview and the difference in picture quality was stunning with the Samsung being far and away the best picture - Go have a look in Currys yourself! I thought the 46" might look a bit big in my front room but it actually looks very good just switched off. The picture quality is excellent, even with low bandwidth Sky channels it is ok. As a PC screen it is excellent and really clear. With my Xbox 360 it has taken gaming to a new level and the Footie has never looked so good. Tried it with the Sky HD samples and the picture is crystal clear... hurry up with that HD box! As the bloke with the bone in his hair in the Simpsons exclaims... "I've never seen a picture so highly defined!"

ProsCons
Picture quality is particularly good. Sound quality is very good. Picture in Picture from differing sources ie PC or Xbox and Sky. PRICE!Heavy - 27KG Large picture can highlight poor quality channels.

Fantastic quality and excellent value for money

Bought it for my Xbox 360. Now severely lacking in sleep and lost all interest in the real world. Picture quality is superb as is the price. Friends frequently "pop in" to see me then gaze for hours at it. I know several people with plasmas and they all want to upgrade to one of these.
ProsCons
HD quality is amazing but even for normal DVD/TV etc you notice a real difference. Wow factor is very high. Some amazing presets and features including PIP (picture in picture)Bit heavy to be lifting by yourself. You must make sure you can sit at a reasonable distance away from it. Some digiatl TV channels are not brilliant quality but maybe you just notice it cause of the size.

Samsung LE46M51

bOUGHT THIS tv recently--absolutely superb--Played King Kong DVD on a standard Player--cannot see how HD could improve picture---no apparent digital shift on even the fastest moving images--Wonderful sharp images and none reflective screen--the major advantages over Plasma.
ProsCons
Brilliant dynamic picture with good depth and natural colours. On a few Sky channels the facial images are smeared and chalky--this seems aLCD trait
