Panasonic TH-42PHD8UK 42 inch plasma TV review
Design
Unlike its brothers and sisters, this little Panasonic plasma TV is simplicity personified. They’ve moved away from the brass in-your-face silver TV with the curved stand of the Viera range and instead opted for a subtle, simple matt black finish (you can also get it in a subtle silver). There’s very little to see other than the large 42 inch TV screen, surrounded by a black plastic frame and a small Panasonic logo. In the bottom left corner is the green/red LED power light and just below that you’ll find the volume button, menu and inputs. While this model is for wall mounting you can buy a stand for it but it will cost you extra. You can also, if you want, buy some Panasonic speakers but we just attached our surround sound to the wall mounted plasma TV.
Setup/Installation
This television works the same as all other Panasonic plasma TVs. Plug it in, switch it on and let the internals work their magic.
Features
There’s an aspect ratio of 16:9 but unfortunately it doesn’t kick in when you’re watching through your HD DVD or HD Sky box and the contrast ratio is a very respectable 3000:1 keeping it at the top end of the contrast-ratio leader board. The native resolution of the Panasonic TH-42PHD8UK is 1,024 x 768, which theoretically isn’t enough to fully resolve 720p HDTV, but it still manages to handle any high definition source. The 3D colour management system adds to the colour experience of the TV as does the Black Drive system for dark-area contrast. We love PIP. Picture to picture is the perfect solution for advert surfing – when the commercials are on, you can start watching something better but keep an eye on your original programme and another if you chose because there’s two PIP boxes. And with this Panasonic plasma you can move the pictures around so you could have your PIP inset or you could have them side by side. There aren’t speakers and there isn’t a built-in tuner so if you want satellite channels you’re going to have to go for Sky or an external Freeview box. They’ve also added a fan-less quiet operation mode which is an improvement as we found the fan on other Panasonic models could start whining like a good ‘en. The Panasonic TH-42PHD8UK has an acceptable amount of connectivity with four inputs, which are fitted into removable boards that slot into sections on the back of the plasma giving you the flexibility add or remove inputs as you please. |
Performance
Stumbling across the Panasonic TH-42PHD8UK was like stumbling across an unearthed mound of gold. The performance of this plasma TV is absolutely fantastic. The blacks are so deep it almost makes you want to put your snorkeling goggles on. Because of the colouring technology the dark parts of the picture are true black and the colours radiating from the screen are absolutely delicious giving you much finer detail. And you’ll notice there’s no shadowing and hardly any noise. All this is on normal TV, when you hook up to a HD source the colours are richer than Posh and Becks’ and totally vibrant, and able to pick up on the smallest of details. The only drawback is the lack of speakers attached to the TV but then if you want the real TV experience you’ll be hooking up to your surround sound.
What's In The Box?
The Panasonic TH-42PHD8UK plasma TV, a remote control, and that's your job lot.
Overall Opinion
For a plasma TV that comes without speakers, a mount and a built-in tuner you’d think we’d be running for cover, but the Panasonic TH-42PHD8UK has got its hooks into us. Why? Because of the truly magnificent picture quality. If you want to submerge yourself into the whole viewing experience this plasma is a winner that will provide endless joy at a reasonable price.
