Samsung YP-T8

The good thing i like about this item is the size and shape, really nice in the pocket and no bad points that stick in you. The plastic cover that came with this is excellent and fits well and feels great in the hand. The music sounds are average and would do most people i would think. The FM radio is good as well. What hurts is the way the buttons are and what they do. I have often got confused as to what one button does, do it, then found out later it still does not always work to my satisfaction. The Nav button is the main problem. Still, all in all a nice set if you can get used to it and cope with a few problems that come up every so often.

Samsung Media Player Review

Samsung’s Yepp YP-T8 512MB Digital Media Player is the smallest of three identical models. Samsung have a monopoly with the YP-T8, as there is nothing else under £100 on the market that plays video. For the 1GB you’ll expect to pay £140 and £160 for the larger 2GB version.

Design

All models are available in black or white, the design is easily mistaken for a mobile phone, probably due to the size. We like the larger size as gives the YP-T8 a good solid feel making it impossible to lose in the bottom of you bag. Like all other recent MP3 players, the YP-T8 has tried to imitate the signature iPod cliker wheel. This time it’s a click rocker switch that comes nowhere near the quality of the iPod one. It’s hard to use, and took us ages to get used to it. The design is hard to damage, after a few weeks hanging around in my bag amongst nail files and such like it still looked unharmed. In the box you get a nice rubber cover – there is no reason not to use it. Down at the bottom of the YP-T8 you’ll find the in-built microphone. We thought the location was a bit odd, you’ll probably agree when you find that you can’t see the screen when recording. The 21mm LCD is clear and provides a good performance with animated graphics.

Setup/Installation

We enjoyed using the Samsung mp3 player software for audio transfers. It’s been redesigned recently giving it a much more sophisticated look with nice, simple menus and lots of cool options.

Features

The YP-T8 is a flash-based media player with a 1024MB flash memory and a wealth of other impressive features. It plays MPEG-4 videos and displays JPEG photographs which are both nice features but the screen just isn’t big enough to accommodate them. After a while it just strains your eyes. It’s got a built-in microphone so you can use the YP-T8 as a voice recorder. It also impressed us with its FM radio – one up on the iPod family! We like how compatible it is with online music stores, the only one you can’t use is iTunes, big, big shame. It kindly supports MP3, WMA, OGG and WAV.

Performance

As we’ve already said, the LCD screen does well to do what it does but it is just lacking size really. The YP-T8 has lots of audio options and pre-settings including equalisers such as 3D effects, seven band user defined equaliser, and a great street setting for those traffic jammed environments. The headphones that come with the player are positively useless, we would have probably got better sound out of yogurt pots and a piece of string. Don’t leave the shop without an extra pair, take our word for it – you’ll be disappointed. Headphones aside, the sound isn’t as good as the Nano or the Shuffle come to think of it. Most people probably wouldn’t notice but we thought it lacked clarity when the volume is cranked up. Samsung claim the battery life is 38 hours long but we managed to get just 21hours of listening to music and watching about 12 minutes of video. It still beats the Nano with its abysmal poor 13 hour battery life!

Overall Opinion

The Samsung YP-T8 is a very good video player. The screen puts on a good display and the sound is good enough for its position in the market too. What we would say is that the YP-T8 is a little man doing a big mans job, nice try but it is just too small to house videos. If you are after a portable video player that offers a better performance you should consider the Archos AV700 or the PQI mPack P600.
