I purchased a Smeg retro fridge in silver several years ago and have regretted it ever since. I have since learned to research and check reviews prior to making such an expensive purchase. However, when you are paying £1k for a fridge from what I thought was a quality brand, this should not have been an issue. The fridge does look very nice and the ratio of fridge to freezer is very good as I do not need much freezer space. Unfortunately, my problems began when all of the shelves started to break. I paid for them to be replaced and at £12 per shelf at that stage was not too fussed though a little frustrated. However, when I found myself in the same situation again 12 months later I was less forgiving. I contacted Smeg to order replacements only to be told that the shelves now cost £48 each. I emailed their service department to ask if these shelves were stronger and better quality and why did they keep breaking. They questioned me as to what I was putting on them. Its a fridge, what do you think?! Not happy with this I complained to their customer service department and they advised they would replace 2 shelves. In actual fact they sent me one. Other problems are that the back of the fridge ices up and I have to wipe the bottom shelf everyday as water builds up. Recently 2 of the shelves on the door broke. I am now having my kitchen completely renovated and will finally be able to put this fridge in the skip where it belongs. I could probably sell it on Ebay but unlike Smeg, I do not like to sell faulty goods. I would never recommend this product.
