Review of the Shinco SDP-1250 Portable DVD Player with screen

As one of China's leading DVD manufacturers, Shinco is providing some of the best portable DVD players on the market.  It's just such a shame that they're not well known throughout Europe, and people aren't giving them a fair trial.  So, out of the kindness of our hearts we decided to give the SDP-1250 a go.

Design

You'll be lucky to find a good-looking portable DVD player in all honesty. They always seem to look like an 1980's laptop, so when we checked out the SDP-1250 with its futuristic design we were slightly impressed. It measures 257 x 168 x 32 mm and weighs an easy to handle 1.2kg. The main laptop-style design is silver in colour, with even shinier silver buttons on the lower part of the device. The screen dominates the whole area of the lift-up part, as the speakers are situated at the at either end of the bottom part. In between the neatly placed speakers there are five buttons to help you navigate, stop and start your DVDs. To the right of the disc loader there are a few more control buttons, and a 4-way control pad with central selector. The awesomely big 10.2 inch widescreen is one of the biggest you’ll get on a portable DVD player. To carry the player from home to car, or to watch a DVD on the train, the SDP-1250 is ergonomically pleasing, making it a pleasure to use.

Features

There’s only so many features a portable DVD player can boast, but we were happy to find that the Shinco SDP-1250 had a spec list to be proud of. Not only has it got great connectivity, it is also hugely compatible. You can expect to play all of your home-made DVDs as well as purchased ones. This little beauty supports the play of DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, MP3, JPEG, MPEG, DivX, and even Kodak Photo CDs. We were overjoyed with the SDP-1250’s connectivity, which included 2 headphone sockets, component video out, AV out, S-Video Out, Digital Audio Out, AV in, MMC/SD/Memory card and USB port for viewing those snaps from your digital camera, or even audio with a flash drive. And last but not least, to prevent electrocuting the kids, Shinco have provided the SDP-1250 with anti-shock technology for those little accidents in the back of the car.

Performance

When reviewing picture performance, we are always on the look-out for floors, so we were glad to find that with the SDP-1250, there aren’t many to mention. The superb resolution fills the screen with 10.2-inches of impressive performance. The colours are realistically bright, and are backed up with great clarity. The only noticeable problem was some slight picture blur on more than one speedy scene, but we agreed it wasn’t too much of a problem. The battery pack took 4.5 hours to fully charge, and gave us a whole 3 hours playback time thereafter. We tried the SDP-1250 out in the back of the car to check out the viewing angles, and unfortunately we weren’t impressed. The viewing angle has definitely got room for improvement. We would suggest to Shinco that they get some headrest mounting happening, in order to offer a better view, especially in the car.

Overall Opinion

We enjoyed every minute spent using the SDP-1250 portable DVD player, in fact, we were overly impressed by how long it provided us with a great performance.  We especially liked the easy to use design making it perfect for the kids to use.  For £250 the SDP-1250 portable DVD player provides a great performance both visually and sonically, making it a perfect addition to the Christmas list.
