Canon Ixus i7 zoom digital camera review

Design

The design of the i7 zoom is slim and lovely.  The ultra compact Digital IXUS i7 zoom only measures 96.1 x 45.1 x 23.9 mm which is so slim, it will discretely slip in anywhere.  Available in steely silver, shocking pink, chocolate brown and night blue the long elongated body is book ended with silver caps.  On the right the silver homes the lens and also the flash.  Turn the camera around and you’ll find the 1.8 inch screen to the left and directly to the right Canon have located a circular navigation wheel together with buttons for function setting, menu and Picturebridge as well as a slid to select from digital camera to movie recording to play functions.  And right at the top of the camera, sitting proud is the on/off power button and the picture capture button as well as a microphone.
Setup/Installation
It’s a Canon digital camera, there’s very little to say other than switch it on, charge the battery up and start taking pictures – and enjoy every minute of it thanks to the beauty of the i7 zoom.
Features
The 7.1 Megapixel Digital IXUS i7 zoom comes with and Canon’s new DIGIC III processor for clearer, sharper images as well as rapid performance and improved image rendering.  The DIGIC III also plays a big role in reducing noise at speeds of up to ISO 1600. What we really like about the new Canon digital camera breed is the Face Detection AF/AE system and this digi cam is no different.  What it means is that the camera’s own intelligence to detect faces in front of the lens.  So it doesn’t matter what else is in the way, the Ixus i7 locks onto up to nine faces and keeps them in focus. The 2.4x zoom is a new safety zoom that offers greater telephoto reach without losing image quality.  There are up to 17 different shooting modes including special scene modes and movie modes one of which is a new Aquarium scene mode which increases colours and controls the flash and ISO when photographing underwater life in glass tanks.  There’s a one-touch direct printing and uploading which also doubles up as a vertical shutter release so you can more easily shoot portraits.  You can take movies with VGA at 30fps and QVGA up to 60fps.
Performance
Kate Moss, you better step aside luv, there’s something prettier and better than you.  It’s a beautifully simple camera that does as it says.  The functions are really easy to follow, there’s nothing difficult in any of the functions and like all other Canon digital cameras it works well.  The Face Detection is really good at locking into faces so that things stay in focus and the different shooting modes mean the camera is good for any occasion. And the ability to play your pictures directly to the TV is a nice touch.

Overall Opinion
We think this is one of the most attractive cameras around and have fallen in love with it.  Not only does it look great but it functions well too.  What more could you ask from an ultra compact digital camera?  Anyone with one of these in their Christmas stocking would be thrilled.
ProsCons
Look great Ultra compact 7 megapixel Easy to use Face recognition Doesn't have wi-fi Zoom could have been bigger

Ixus i Refurbished purchased August 2005

I bought this little Ixus refurbished when my other camera was in for repair. The refurb Ixus also needed repair as when I got the images up on screen I found that there was dirt inside the lens. I sent the camera off for repair and this came back OK. I also asked them to look at the focussing. I find it very difficult to focus the camera on any ssetting, but especially at night on long shutter speed. Apart from that, the camera is compact, looks good and is OK for snaps. Don't expect much from the digital zoom at 3x it looks as though its 'all pixels', its best for snaps and the macro feature works well for close ups. Good brand, good software, good manual, poor zoom, focus unresolved pending moving back to manufacturer settings as prescribed by Canon support.
ProsCons
Brand, compact size and appearance, macro feature.Focus setting, not much zoom.
