smeg head or smug

i came across this site and reviews while trying to track down another part from our smeg, we love the fridge, but the trays break when you wash them in hot water, the ice box door is constantly breaking and won''''t close properly. The seal on the fridge door has never fitted properly and now has a half inch gap at the top which makes the ice box freeze up even more. The spare parts are ridiculously expensive. It is an iconic piece but apart from looking good is completely useless and i would advise anyone not to buy one.

Hmm! thats the sound of me accepting finally what i have known for the last 3 years - my smeg fridge is beautiful but useless:(

Every negative comment is true, my son opened the door on the ice box and it came off in his hand (i was so mad at him for ages, am so sorry now!) the light is gone, dont even bother to replace bulbs, everything on the top shelf freezes, the clips that hold the shelves are starting to go now! i was completely taken in by the smeg retro looks, i fell in love with it and forked out €1800 of my hard earned money, am so disappointed and annoyed, feel really ripped off! SMEG company shouldnt be allowed get away with this!

Candy stripped fridge with ice box

I did not realise the faults on this item untill reading this page. The thermostat packed up less than 3years old,a new bracket has to be put on the door because of its weight.Having paid £1000 for what i thought was a top range product my £300 one far outlasted this.I have e/mailed H/Oficce in england ,italy .and so far have had a reply to say the top man is looking into it.6weeks on i am still waiting for spares the fridge is not up to the job ,i want a part refund but as no one from customer service at H/O dont contact me on repair i am on my own.You pay your money and tough luck if it goes wrong seems the attitude.

The bad reviews are all true... :(

Sadly the poor reviews you read are all true. The fridge is very expensive, but you cannot deny that it looks stylish. However, you will soon find that things break because of poor materials and bad design. A classic is the ice box; you can be sure that this will break. I''m currently searching for a new door handle mechanism to keep the ice box door closed. Replacement parts are ludicrously expensive (£85 for the ice box door, £81 for a salad drawer!!!) It looks fabulous, and as a fridge it works adequately, but I wish I''d bought something for one third of the price and ten times the quality - i.e. anything else.

Smeg Fridge - nice to look at but not up to the job

Like many other reviewers, I fell for the looks and reassuringly high price (indicating wrongly quality). The fridge door plastic hangers for the heavy bottles have fallen off and I am extremely disappointed. It looks great but will not be buying again.

The Devils fridge

You''ve read it all before....everything is true. This is the worst appliance I have ever had the misfortune to spend £1000 on. Somebody (in Italy?) said "look what I have designed, its a wonderful throwback to the fifties consumer society in the United States! ",Then the man from the engineering accounts dept of Smeg arrived, rubbed his chin and said "yes, lets make it from the poorest materials we can get our hands on, lets have a hilarious warranty set up, a cavalier attitude to customer service and lets set new boundaries in unreliability" They managed to do all this and more, they flogged them to people like me for 3 times the price of the fridge I should have bought......

smeg fridge retro style

I bought a smeg fridge 5 years ago cost me €1,800.00. and from the time I bought it everything on it broke I had to have the door replaced it would not close properly I had so much trouble with the manufacturers that by the time they replaced it with another one that never closed properly I just let it be but everything inside broke. today 5 years on every shelf has broken the plastic sides that are suppose to hold up those heavy glass shelves are all missing, Its a very bad design system the interior is so cheap and the parts so fragile I dont know how smeg have been able to sell this fridge for the price with a shoddy interior this is only my 3rd fridge in almost 40 years and the other fridges while I replaced them for a more up to date style were perfect when disposing of them. Yes I love the look but thats all it has disgraceful interior should not be allowed dont buy one.

smeg fridge

I purchased a smeg fridge a few years ago in gorgeous pale blue but have since disposed of it and gave it to a friend. the design is gorgeous but the cheap parts inside let it down everything on it broke. first the freezer door, then tray inside for the milk etc, the the egg trays the vegetable box also broke. these fridges are overpriced and poor quality I cant believe people are still able to sell them on ebay for around £400?? Im moving house soon and having to leave my samsung american fridge behind which is perfect!! but I have dicided to go retro again and I am going to purchase a Gorenje fridge instead they are cheaper and from reviews better quality!!!!

Fab? Yes and no

Firstly i must say i absolutely love my Smeg Fridge. Was a wedding gift from the in-laws 11 years ago. Yes 11 years. It is a gorgeous aqua/turquoise colour and looks great in my 50''s style diner kitchen. Open the door and omg..... What a mess. My daughter just yesterday dropped the milk carton on the door shelf and the whole thing split dropping all the other bottles out. The shelf with the white spikey plastic gripper bits has lost most of the bits. Food freezes up if its anywhere near the back wall. The freezer door handle has also snapped off completely, But it is oldqA Just been trying to find a new shelf online, but now thinking about just switching the whole thing off, using it as a larder, and buying a decent fridge/freezer for the utility room instead. Can''t bear the thought of not having it in my kitchen :-(

SMEG Fridge - Very poor design

If you want decent quality then look elsewhere. I have had the same problems as everyone else. I believe SMEG re-designed the Ice Box door mechanism and if it''''s true then they should send out replacements to all those affected free of charge as clearly there was always a design flaw. I won''''t be holding my breath though and will never buy another SMEG.

I love Smeg

I have had my cream SMEG fridge freezer for 9 years now and I love it! The only problem I had was the bottle container rack clip snapping, and I was able easily to order another on-line which was delivered speedily. The shelves in mine are glass with plastic trim and easy to clean and it looks really good in my kitchen. Withe the solidness of the doors you don''t get the dents that you get in a normal white metal fridge We have a second home, and I am determined to buy a SMEG larder fridge for the new kitchen we are having installed there.

SMEG FRIDGE

I have finally given up holding onto my Smeg fridge of 5 years and yesterday ordered a new one. I would never buy Smeg again. It looks great but the whole of the inside has practically fallen apart. The light went and new bulbs did not fix the problem - so obviously a dodgy connection. The ice compartment box door fell off - didn''t fancy spending nealy £100 to replace it. Every single plastic shelf ledge support broke, and both bottle door racks broke and a couple of the smaller ones higher up cracked. I have never been as disappointed with an appliance for quality as I have with Smeg.

Cheaper alternative to buying new shelves or trims

For all of you with broken shelf trims or shelves on your fridge, we have found a MUCH cheaper solution. Don''t buy one of the over priced SMEG spares, but get a new shelf made to measure! We went to a glass merchant, and they cut and polished us a new shelf made from special glass for just £13! The SMEG shelf just sits on the little ledges anyway, so it is no different to have your own one cut to size that sits on the little ledges too. You don''t actually need the ultra-expensive flimsy plastic trims that always seem to be breaking, as the glass can sit on the plastic ledges. Like all of you we have had no end of problems with this fridge with so many of the flimsy plastic bits breaking. But now we''re stuck with it, we are determined not to waste any more money on the expensive spares.

Touch wood......

We acquired our SMEG fridge second hand for £400, when we bought our house so it''''s probably six years old now. It matches the kitchen and looks great... however we have had similar problems regarding the milk/juice shelves snapping and the chiller door falling off it''''s hinges, ( my daughter opened it, dropped something, stood up and banged her head on it causing it to break off) i now realise i owe her an apology as it wasn''''t completely her fault- looks like it would have come off anyway!!! Apart from that, touch wood, it''''s fine. I can only think that Smeg have ''''dumbed'''' this appliance right down and started to use cheap materials which is outrageous taking into account the price of these things. I was thinking of buying a replacement (different colour) but after reading all of the horrendous reviews i won''''t be bothering. P.s I stuck the door back on with sellotape, a cheaper option and it seems to do the trick, as long as i never open it. Just means the g.& t. is always warm.
ProsCons

dissillusioned smeg owner

My husband and I were seduced by the good looks and general ''coolness'' of the retro smeg fridge. We used some of our wedding presant money to purchase a pink one and were really pleased with it ! For about a month, when the bulb went ,we replaced it and it went again and again. Then one day while my Father in Law was visiting ,''The door fell off '' IT HAS SINCE FELL OFF A FURTHER 3 TIMES. The glass shelves all broke, it fluctuates in temperature and freezes the vegetables and salad.Has also been known to freeze double cream ,ham and preety much everything else you put in it.It builds up ice so badly at the back that I chip it off and my boys have snowball fights in The garden. One other thing, the fridge door has faded to a pale pink whilst the freezer door remained the same colour so we now have a two tone fridge. We have now seen sense and just brought a boring silver one for about £230, we thought we would go on a mini break to Barcelona with the money we have saved by not buying a Smeg and now have a fridge that actually works! amazing! Form over function!!

I wished for a smeg fab fridge for so long, saved up and purchased the pink version. It looked lovely in our kitchen, however within a week the shelves holding the milk broke, the fridge freezes up at the back so any bottles stored ice up! It fluctuates in tempreture from slightly cold to freezing. The ice box seal is broken so that the ice compartment builds itself an iceberg until you defrost it, again!!. It looks beautiful but really is a big bag of doggy doo!!! We have now bought ourselves a samsung fridge/freezer which has a better warranty, is twice as big as the smeg and cost over a hundred and fifty pounds less. Would never, recommend buying one of these to anyone and feel for all those who have been seduced by its good looks only to find it is completely useless.

Laugh - how i laughed reading these reviews

My fridge is just over 4 yrs old and i like everyone else am looking for parts for my SHITE SMEG fridge. I paid just uder 1k for this item and he has never worked properly. All food has to be stored far away from the back of the fridge or it is frozen. The door does not shut properly and i am on my second fridge, the first replaced under warranty. The bulbs i have been through i have lost count, i thought they must be faulty until about the fifth one now i like coutless others dont bother. The temperature in mine is also inconsistant. I like everyone else feel like i have been mugged and fell for the look of the fridge and how it would look in my kitchen. I do still like the look of the fridge after 4 years and like how heavy the door is which stops my 2 year old being able to open it but this said it is not fit for purpose and cannot be reccommended. Do not touch with a bargepole. I do feel blessed as my freezer box is still ok ( fingers crossed )

Had only a very few problems

My story is that I''ve had my smeg fab for 7 years and i''ve not experienced half the problems everyone else has. The only niggly annoyance is that every now and then (say once every 3 months or so), the fridge leaks a bit enough that I get a small pool of smeg pee across the floor. I just mop it up and there doesn''t ever seem to be any more. Unsure as to why that happens but I didn''t see it as a huge problem. Also the freezer part makes heavy ice every about 3 months or so and I know it''s time to defrost. Again, didn''t see this as a huge problem because I thiought this was normal. My ice box has never broken and I''ve pulled it hard a fair few times due to being unable to open the ice shut door; none of the door trays have cracked or broken nor the shelves or salad box. I haven''t replaced the light in the duration i''ve had it and the thermostat is fine... all produce are cold and the door seal has never come unstuck or out its hinges. After reading these unfortunate reviews, if i saw this years ago before i bought my fridge, i would not have purchased a smeg and I would not advise anyone else to purchase one now because of the amount of negative reviews on this site... maybe i was lucky with my fridge but that hasn''t been the same for everyone else here! There is something I did notice about these fridges.... I was snooping around John Lewis the other day and had a look at some Fab fridges and noticed that the material used was not the same as mines. After tapping it with my fingers, I discoverd that the material seemed to be made of plastic including the body, door as well as the shelves! I also recognised that the fridge was slimmer than mines and the insides too. They have definitely changed the size, innards and material used and are still charging a grand for them!!! Outrageous. My fridge is extremely heavy and when tapped, feels like metal not plastic. By the way, my fridge is pink and we call her Schmink.

Have had fab 28 last 4 years or so, usual things broken, small lugs on freezer door went about 12 months ago , have steadfastly refused to buy replacement due to outlandish cost, have now just repaired them using a length of plastic dowel out of sons KNEX toy. Just drill door through at site of hinge and push dowel through, works a treat .Thanks to the person whose idea this was. MY WORST NIGHTMARE

we bought a smeg fridge with freezer on top and from day one the food was frozen, hot and limp that was the fridge part. The glass trays have all cracked and runners broke. The light bulb went the water dripped down through the fridge and now the bloody seal has broken and we have to keep a kitchen stool up against it to keep the door closed. Smeg by name Smeg by nature

This is a comment about Smeg generally rather than this particular ''''''''fridge. Their products do not in my experience last very long. I have a Daewoo ''''''''fridge that cost just over £100 twelve years ago, it''''''''s still as good as the day it was bought. My Smeg ''''''''fridge broke down after four years and it''''''''s replacement also lasted four years. Smeg couldn''''''''t have cared less, despite my being in the construction industry and ina position to specify their products they couldn''''''''t have been less interested. Fortunately for me I came across the fridgeshop.net where they told me that it was probably just the thermostat and sold me a replacement for £26.00. Smeg didn''''''''t suggest that it might be the thermostat and when I suggested it to them thye tried to sell me a replacement for £82.00 for exactly the same part as I got for £26.00. Need I say more, nobody but a mug would buy this garbage

Fab?!! Is that a joke?

I cannot stress strongly enough how much i agree with the reviews on this site. Smeg fridges look lovely but are made with very poorly constructed, brittle plastic. EVERY shelf in the darn thing has broken and it has been known to leak water from time to time. Guys, it''''s pretty, but that is it. Mine is all but redundant - every shelf broken!! Avoid,

Shaddapa ya Fridge

As a piece of visual fluff it is fantastic. In a museum with a no touching sign and guarded by a student listening to an ipod reading a book it would last a hundred years. In a family setting with two boys and a heavy handed pair of grown ups it is simply ridiculous. Visitors coo over it like a puppy but then laugh as I serve them warm beer and go outside to the cheap but effective freezer in the garage for ice... The freezer door broke within weeks of purchase and has never been used since. The majority of the interior plastic has cracks and flaws and I wonder if it was all dipped in dry ice before assembly because it is so remarkably fragile. Lets be honest here though every SMEG fridge purchase is a vanity buy and all such purchases eventually haunt you. Perhaps SMEG fridges have some sort of deeper meaning and do reflect a wider malaise where good looks, curves and a flirtatious exterior trump lasting commitment and integrity. If our fridge were a person it would be an x factor rather than krypton factor winner. Look deep into your soul and you will see that the fridge fills a void or emptiness... SMEG/SMUG I’m not so sure anymore. My only consolation is that we paid about 400 quid for ours because it was reconditioned and its previous lover had got out early in the relationship after the thermostat had blown. In spite of all the failings I can''t be certain I would not buy another one because vanity just gets you again and again. If anyone knows where you can get a cheap freezer door from I would be very grateful - I’m off for a warm beer.

Never, ever invest in s smeg fridge!!

Similar to most people who have written on this site, I found it whilst... yes you guessed it... looking for spare parts for the stupid, rubbish smeg fridge that consistantly falls apart!! I thought maybe it was just me but having read the reviews I have exactly the same complaints as everyone else - the freezer door hinge and handle are broken, the rather pathetic plastic nodules that hold the shelves on the inside of the door have all snapped and broken too. I wrote to smeg saying that I was very unimpressed with the quality (or lack of it) and they they basically wrote back and washed their hands of the situation. It is really bad quality, really expensive and really shoddy customer service. If I can give anyone a piece of good advice do not buy a smeg fridge!!

ProsCons
Freezer Door - Hinges brake really easily Inside of the door - The nodules that hold the shelves in place brake really easily and you have to buy a whole new door, costing in excess of £300, to fix it!!

SMEG YUK!

Could not agree more with all the reviews - what one has to remember is that style does not necessarily eqaute to the design integrity of the product. The build quality of an original Alex Issigonis Mini was a long way from the design. The SMEG fridges are the most expensive paint jobs that you can buy anywhere - you could probably have a Bentley re-sprayed for less money. As you all say the rest is rubbish and we have been royally conned. But then again if you listen to Mr Berlosconi, it is hardly surprising. Main thing is also to avoid buying an AEG Dual Fuel Cooker - that''s known as a double whammy!!

Cold war!

My Smeg fridge has finally packed up today. It is 6 years old and has being a disaster from day one with things breaking/falling off, not being cold enough/freezing up, leaking water, faults with the freezer box seal and handle etc. Phone calls and letters to Smeg UK proved futile and clearly demonstrated their state of denial. I love the visual aspect of the Smeg though and almost ordered a new one, thinking Smeg would by now have ''ironed out'' all the problems . . . then I found this helpful selection of reviews and decided I was making a big mistake! I am taking delivery of a Gorenje, mentioned here by another reviewer, on Monday. Maybe in the future I will re evaluate the Smeg fridge but it would take a great deal of improvement by the manufacturer. As currently produced it is, basically, an expensive ornament!

Beautiful but rubbish

Having persisted with this beautiful aberration for far too long - it is finally on it''''s way to join the ever growing mountain of sub-standard, poorly performing, badly manufactured and frustration inducing rubbish that is the Smeg refrigerator range. Why an appliance costing this much has so many very basic faults is beyond logic. It is the very epitome of "style over substance". Be warned - sometimes it really is better to pay a little less and get something that perform infinitely better!

Fab 28 - rubbish fridge - totally disappointing

We purchased a Smeg fridge freezer 18 months ago. One would expect when you are paying almost 1K for an applicance you would get a decent lifespan from it. Not so! Like everyone else we never thought to check for reveiws before buying. Of course it looks great but really is rubbish. Thermostat already gone, fridge is warm inside, door shelves broken. Smeg aftersales is non-existent. They are totally unhelpful. Dont want to know. Avoid this fridge and these people! We also noticed people like John Lewis no longer have this fridge for sale.

Plastic trays breaking, freezer door split at handle, clips to hold trays on the door snapped (milk explosion!) temperature changes throughot fridge, AND THATS NOT ALL THE FAULTS . Wont be buying the spares now, ill stick to the hard as nails and glue for our repairs! Smeg Not Fab28

Well I best just join the queue! I pride myself on taking a lot of care with all my appliances and I have managed to get to 3 years ownership out of this fridge, but now everything that can break has done; the ice box door, the plastic shelf protectors which hold up the glass shelves, the salad box, and now the final insult, all the plastic retainers moulded inside the door which hold the plastic shelves in place. (Have just had a very nasty accident with broken milk bottles and leaking juice cartons all over the kitchen floor). This fridge is very beautiful but totally useless. The only thing that has made me smile is some of the reviews about it on this website!. I also purchased a smeg dishwasher that is near impossible to stack without a phd in design and which required a callout from a smeg engineer to retrieve the on/off switch which fell inside the machine within 3months due to use of shoddy connection materials. Like an idiot I thought Smeg was a name you could trust. Will be contacting trading standards as this fridge is just not fit for purpose.

Smeg FAB28 With Ice Box

Just had to include a review on this. I bought one of these fridges because of the name SMEG and how beautiful it was. I have been so very disappointed, the ice box door fell off, it leaks water constantly from the base, the retainers for the shelves in the door all snapped off. OMG Yet another crap review

We have Smeg Fab28AZ maybe a slightly smaller model but it too has broken icebox door, and fragile shelves. I would class us as very light fridge users (no children). Shelf slid down and smashed after decamping food to coldest room while waiting for Comet engineers to fix. Yes it had broken down! Now I know Smeg cookers are crap however the Comet extended warranty engineers and customer service are able to match it in the "it doesn''t do what it says on the can stakes. 5 weeks and still no fridge! Terrible Smeg Fridges! BEWARE

I cant believe these Fridges are still on Sale! what a con. As a family of five we treated ourselves to this fridge to complete the look of our new Kitchen. I have to clean this fridge out more than we clean the car. Any food left on the top shelf is coated in water the next morning. In the summer months its even worse. The seals on the main fridge collapsed within 3 months when we phoned Smeg (under warranty) the Service Engineer arrived and told my wife to heat the seals with a hair dryer to stretch them -he wouldnt do it himself. The top freezer box ices up once a month fully and seals the door shut. The flippin thing snapped off last week and we are now on the look out for another - just seen one for £69.99!!! For a bit of plastic. The british consumer has been well and truely stiched up by SMEG Fridges - NEVER BUY ONE!! EVER!

Now I know why the previous occupants left the

I stumbled across this sight when looking for a spare - yes you guessed it - ice box door. The person I bought my flat from left the fridge - which was pretty unbelievable - since then it has NEVER worked properly - constantly frosting and defrosting - and has actually caused damage to my kitchen since I didnt realise it was defrosting at the back of the fridge and onto the floor - seaping beneath the tiles - I realised this when water started coming up from under the tiles. I dont know what to do now - if I could - I would like to get rid of it and find a reliable smaller cheaper fridge. Advice is the same as everyone elses - Dont buy SMEG - I dont think I will ever trust the brand again - shame because they look great.

STRP\32 (FAB32) - It''s really Smegma

This pile of junk has wasted a lot of my time and money:- door seals went, most of the shelves broke, iceburgs appeared in fridge and freezer. Fridge door bottle tray broke after 3 weeks, replacement lasted 8 weeks, then we just didnt bother replacing it again, glass shevles inside broke, pull out plastic trays broke, etc. All of this within 4 years. replacment parts, what a joke, to get a new door seal costs 300 pounds, but that''s for a new door as its not sold seperately. Fab looking fridge with frightful, fragile fitttings

I bought this fridge because it looked good - and I failed to research it because Smeg has a good name and I thought that nowadays all fridges - especially expensive ones would be of serviceable quality. Wrong! Within days the first bit of plastic failed - a lid for one of the small door compartments. I should have sent the fridge back then but I was still in love with its looks and assumed the break was a one off. Since then, one by one bits have broken - all the door shelves, several of the lugs that hold the glass shelves in place, the salad drawer and the door seal which was designed with huge gaps at the corners that you could feel cold air escaping through. I padded them out with wedges from artists canvasses and that has helped - the wedges are about 5mm thick! The price of spare parts is iniquitous (£44 for a salad box!) - all in all this has been my worst domestic buy ever.

Im not alone!! My SMEG Is DEAD!!!

I can not believe that so many people have had the same problem as me. My SMEG s28 STRP is a monster. It looks beautiful but this is something you should definatley not judge by its cover! How come it hasnt been on watch dog yet? The fridge consumes any food thats dumb enough to stray near the back of the shelves, in 3 inches of ice. It freezes eveything that isnt in the door, the stuff in the door is warm because the seal has gone. Once its decided it doesnt want to be a giant iceburg anymore it suddenly switches itself off (usually when im asleep) and promptly defrosts itself all over the floor! The light broke within a week. The shelve bracket thingys snapped one by one over the first few months (the only thing that hold the shelves up now are carefully placed bottles and jars!). I was searching on the net to look for spare parts etc but im not going to bother now. YOU CANT POLISH A TURD!!!! Maybe we should all get together and sue those SMEG people!

Smug Smeg

This is great!! What a relief!! I can share my pain about this really, really bad fridge! Ice box door has snapped several times, door shelves cracked to pieces ( a fortune to replace) the weakest fittings known to man, dripping ice box and now...well, it just stays nice and warm!!! Smeg buyers I feel your pain

I was overjoyed with my Christmas fridge bought for me Xmas 2006. One of the plastic container coverings died in the first week, but I put that down to our clumsiness. However, it was shortly followed by the other container cover a month later. On closer inspection I realised the makeup of the interior was, well, cheap plastic tat and have been treating it gingerly ever since. The wretched thing cost more than my car, and is disguised as a robust tough take-any-knocks appliance. 6 months ago I noticed that the contents of the top shelf appeared to be unusually wet, and discovered the icebox was dripping. Defrosting it seemed to make little difference as it silted up with ice again rapidly and continued to dampen my food on a daily basis. Today, whilst attempting to put something in the freezer, the freezer door came off in my hand. I checked the hinges and found they had snapped off and were ridiculously puny in the first place and not suitable for a door of this size. I''ve stumbled across this site whilst looking up freezer door replacements and now find that the ailments my fridge suffers from seem to be built in as standard. I''m not impressed, had I seen this site first I might have thought twice about this purchase. Smeg are having a laugh with us! And all those style mags that park a groovily coloured Smeg fridge in their lifestyle shots, as the epitome of style should be ashamed too.

Cheap build, expensive, unreliable.

Under 2 years old, Clear plastic cover on egg box broken (not bothered to fix) Ice box door catch has broken (£60 to replace myself) Compressor has failed (£350 VAT for engineer to replace) Looks lovely, but its cheaper than the cheapest supermarket special on the inside. It makes a mockery of Smeg''''s so called upmarket credentials. A textbook example of style over substance. If this thing retailed for £300 it might be a reasonable disposable confection. It is expensive to buy, but cheap, cheap cheap. Parts are extortionate. Don''''t buy it.

Smeggy Smeg

Cant beleive everybody feels the same as me about their crap smeg. We recieved one from my in laws as a wedding present. (not bad eh I thought at the time) £900 but they look great and I presumed would last a lifetime. Not so 2 and a half years on we have had to call out an engineer due to the fact the seal had broken, we also drew to his attention that the door had a random dint when it has not even been knocked. He said it could be something to do with the door sucking inwards and a fault in the product however there is no way to prove this and a new door is £300!!! two of the cheapo trays in the fridge have also broken and IU dread to think how much they will cost to replace. Smegs are rubbish, the company relies on middle men to do their dirty work, you are playing for the name while some fat cat sits there sunning himself on a beach somewhere spending your money. DONT BUY IT!

SMEG FAB28

Bought this due to design of the SMEG fridges as I knew it would fit into my country kitchen decor. It definitely looks good and it is easy to clean both inside and out. Comes with under handy under shelf wine storage. Take off the nice plastic covering and you have a basic fridge inside. The freezer door broke after 4 months of use. The freezer compartment constantly needs to be defrosted. Lamp has failed twice in a year. Looks good on the outside - disappointed about the build quality. Lot of money for what is essentially a basic fridge.

DONT BUY!! Smeg fridge

- we have had the engineer out several times, to repair door seal, replace switch and control unit - basically Smeg has put a funky curved door onto an out of date, NON frost free fridge and charged the earth for it....the door doesnt close properly, the light broke, the temp isnt constant, contents gets sopping wet if it touches the back.....do yourself a favour and get a decent american fridge freezer, perhaps not as attractive but might actually work!!! THis isnt just a one off, do a google search on reviews and see lots of others.....

I agree!

I too have a FAB28 Fride, I thought it was just mine until I came across this site, whilst looking for a broken icebox. I agree, looks fantastic doesnt it from the outside, but totally falls apart in the inside. So far the ice box door - the hinge attached as broken off, the inside freezes us like an iceberg, the shelves have all snapped an broken and are being held together with tape. The water bottle shelf in the door has broken off - the bit where you put the wire holder in, it broken just there. What a bl...dy nightmare. Oh and it started to rust at the bottom after a year. I called Smeg and guess what - they didnt want to know! I would never buy one of these fridges again. I''ve just found that the icebox door costs over £50! Bl..dy rip off!

Smeg not so Fab

In short, it looks GREAT but you pay for that style with a very poor quality product. The shelves smash so easily, it leaks, the automatic defrost facility goes into overdrive, it s impractical...AVOID! It looks like a 50''s relic for a reason...the technology is also retro.

style over substance doesnt come close. This is the most expensive product I''ve ever bought and it packed up after 15 months. The customer service from Smeg was absolutely appalling and they are totally trading on the glossy magazine image of this product. Fab ? ....more like all fur coat & no knickers!

I came across this site while trying to find spare parts for the beast that resides in my kitchen, the Smeg Fab28 fridge. To date, the light won''t work despite numerous bulb changes, shelves crack and splinter, door shelves implode taking my milk and juice with it..usually all over my feet and kitchen floor, the freezer door has broken at both the hinge and handle ends so it''s producing enough ice to sink the Titanic and it dribbles like a bloke who''s had too much Tetley''s. While it looks great in my kitchen I have to say it is the worst and most expensive purchase of my life and I''m astonished that Smeg continue to get away with this nonsense. To add further insult, the spare parts are rediculously expensive and on a par with the national debt...and it freezes my lettuce ! This fridge is like herpes...best avoided.

Fab Fridge

Just happened to be surfing the web to find if I could buy a replacement ice box door ,when I stubbled on this website and fom all the comments it apears I am not alone. I have been struggling with a broken door for over a year (even my two young children have grasped the art of opening and closing it). Even with the enormous icebergs it creates. I will not be replacing it now I have evidence of this being a common fault. In addition I have already had several replacements for the bottle shelves etc ,fortunately these came under the guarantee but showed that parts were failing within the first few months of purchase. My dream fridge became a nightmare.

Looks good but that''s about it!

Bought my smeg retro fridge 4 years ago, shamelessly seduced by its endless inclusion in every glossy interiors magazine I would have sold my grandmother to get one. I''m on to the 3rd ice box door thingie (at £75 a pop), it actually freezes my eggs and any other foodstuff stupid enough to find its way to the back of the fridge. Most of the plasitc interior shelving has cracked, chipped, or snapped and yesterday the contraption just up and died. It is as we speak blowing out hot air. I was just about to put the bugger on ebay and it must of cottoned on I was up to something giving it an extra special clean and defrosting its sorry excuse for a freezer... Long story short, this fridge is sooooooo rubbish, it looks good from afar but that''s about it. I can''t believe Smeg are getting away with churning these hunks of scrap out and charging us nearly a grand for the pleasure. If you really want one of these fridges I suggest you take up fly fishing, listen to a Paul Mckenna cd or get accupuncture until the urge has passed. If you still feel the need, you can have mine for two quid.

LUCKY ESCAPE!!!

Thank you for all of your reviews on SMEG retro fridges.I too wanted it badly mainly because of its style. However,I just could not let myself to buy one after reading all these scary reviews! In the end,I bought a Gorenje RF6325OC (retro two door fridge/freezer).I hadn not seen it in real life before it was delivered, but what a lovely piece of appliance.Everything is in proportion.I can honestly say it is more stylish&spacious(inside)than Smeg and the price is much more affordable. The model I bought was £664 incl delivery. The most important thing to me is the doors shut tightly, eg the freezer door, once you shut it,you cannot force it open the very next second as the "auto suction" kicks it.That is how strong the design is.You can be sure the food would not get defrosted accidentally. This brand is not well known in UK and it was only by chance I learnt about it by reading the reviews(Kate Warwick) on this website.
ProsCons
GREAT STYLE BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY (FOR RETRO TYPE) IN COMPARISON TO SMEG IT COMES WITH 5 YEARS PARTS AND LABOURS GUARANTEE.THAT IS HOW CONFIDENT THEY ARE WITH THIS PRODUCT.NOTHING!

Smegging SMEG

Everything you have ever read about this fridge is true – IT’S ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. Sold on style rather than function, the inside freezer door cracks and breaks after only a few months and the seals are so poor that water drips constantly from the freezer compartment onto the food in the fridge. The shelf inside the fridge door also broke after a couple of months. I contacted Smeg who told me that the freezer door will break with heavy use and they directed me to their website where replacements can be bought for an extortionate price - is it me? More Smug than Smeg. Take my advice DO NOT BUY THIS FRIDGE.

Although we've had this fridge for 4 years we've had constant problems with the freezer door. which keeps breaking, the replacement costs are extremely expensive almost the cost of a standard fridge, for a piece of plastic that lasts a few weeks. Smeg FAB28 review - disappointed

I brought this fridge in 2004. 6 months on and the thermostat stopped working properly - one day the fridge would be cold the next it would be so warm that even the milk would go off. I had 3 thermostat changes and then tried to get a refund. The retailer failed to provide one, but Smeg agreed to replace the fridge with a new one. 6 months later the exact same problem reoccured. I requested a refund. I have yet to get a refund, but have since had 2 new thermostats, a new door and a new compressor. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT READ THE REVIEWS>.

ProsCons
Family size fridge. Looks good.Poor seal on the door, water drips over food on top tray causing food to get wet, door too heavy, not working more often than it is.

Fridge and shower all in one!

Whilst my Smeg Fab28 looks fab, it's only 18 months old and it's already on it's last legs. It's drips from the top constantly, dripping all over the food on the top shelf. The door no longer shuts as the seal is kaput. The tempurature is either way too hot or so cold everything is frozen. I bought purely for the looks and I've paid the price for being shallow with my buying criterea. Avoid at all cost, unless you've got money to burn and an hour a day spare to be turning the thermostat up and down. How we've avoiding food poisening this far I do not know.

Affordable Retro - Styling! - Shame About The Build Quality -

The Smeg Retro fridge changed the way people in Europe thought about fridges before this beautifully designed icon was unleashed on the public the only fridges that could be brought were white or if you were lucky brown. The Fab28 is our favourite of all the Smeg fridges because the proportions are exactly right when you start adding freezer doors it slightly loses its beauty and lets face it if you are buy the Smeg retro fridge you are buying on looks alone. The Fab range comes in several colours the most popular of which is cream, silver and red. New colours have been added in the last two years some better than others there is the new high gloss black that we thought was great then there was the garish orange which made the fridge look like a advert for tango man.

When you open the door on these design icons things get altogether boring there is 4 glass shelves, 8 plastic door shelf’s and a small freezer box at the top. The problem seems to be that Smeg have spent so long designing the out side of this fridge that they have failed to add any flare or decent build quality to the inside. We have had many complaints over the last two years about the bottom shelf cracking this is something that Smeg say they have now resolved.

Overall Opinion

The Smeg fridge is a great looking appliance which would add a touch of design flare to any kitchen, just don’t expect too much from the inside. Great variety of colours!

Once you get over yourself for buying a stylish fridge, thus avoiding having to face up to the essential emptiness of your life (and mine, no-one gets out of here alive), have a really good look at the seals on the freezer door and on the fridge door itself. Are they up to much? Look a bit flimsy? A bit -what- UNSEALY? Exactly. If SMEG could sort this out, then Id happily buy their fridges forever, but they havent and now my perishables get a shower of water from the freezers inadequate seals. Even worse, the freezer door works on a sprung plastic hinge/handle contraption. Thats broken and I cant find a replacement (the original is a combination of plastic, superglue and household matches). Id bet my house that the break wouldnt have happened if the sodding SEALS were doing their job. As it is, the fridge is a thousand pound rebuke to me for deciding on looks over quality.
