hi jim, the auto start vcr function only works if you have a toshiba av-link compatible video recorder. it doesnt work with anything else.
cheers,matt.

in reply to the question from the unbeatable editor, i have one of these tvs and i can say that it is very good indeed. the picture quality is excellent, fantastic depth of colour especially from a native hd source (in my case xbox360). there are no problems with fast moving video, no blur or anything. i have found it is excellent for my xbox, all the games are fantastic, although the more cartoon like and the brighter the colours the better it looks. some prime examples are project gotham racing, gears of war and hexel that people are really impressed with. i also have the hd-dvd add on and the output from that is jaw-dropping, i got king kong and van helsing and they are both awesome to watch, although the one that people love best is an antarctic nature one and the icebergs and the wildlife is incredible to watch, the detail in the feathers and fur and the background is incredible.
the onboard digital tv decoder is very good, it seems to cope much better with weaker signals than my media center pc, and it does a better job of displaying dtv than any freeview boxes i have connected.
the other thing i have to comment on is the viewability of the tv during the day, it is excellent. i am used to having to shut blinds and curtains because of glare and reflections. i have no issues with this tv, i can watch it in anything but the brightest direct sunlight and still get very good colour clarity and definition. the other thing is that the sound quality of this tv is incredible given that it is a very discrete flat panel. i expected to have to use my surround sound for even ordinary tv, but absolutely not. it is impressive i have to say.
on the downside, i have 3 dead pixels, 2 of them i cant see without looking, but 1 of them is in the middle third of the screen and is bright red, once its caught my eye i keep seeing it all night, especially during darker tv programs, e.g csi. also i have an very occasional issue with vertical banding, but only on the brightest of full white screens (for example on occasional shots during the antarctica hd-dvd i mentioned earlier), but 99.99999% of the time this isnt visible at all. about a 2 inch vertical stripe at the edge of the screen is ever so slightly darker then the rest.
overall i would give the tv 9/10, it loses marks for the dead pixels and the banding, but gains a bonus mark back for the quality of the sound.
