Sony KDL40W2000U Tv - 1080p - 42 Inch Screen Review

There is only one LCD screen that puts on a better all-round performance than the Sony 40W2000, and that is the X-series 40X2000 . And that makes perfect sense to us, as we would be more concerned if Sony ’s newest range didn’t show signs of improvement over the last range. .. .. Read Full Review

User Reviews of the Sony KDL40W2000U Television
Dillon - 19/1/2007
I can't praise this tv enough. The picture quality is simply amazing especially with the bravia engine from sony. Its clear and the colours are wonderful. You can really tell the difference in the green grass and red fires compared to other LCDs. as well as doing 1080p, which is good for the future when things finally catch up to 1080p, the tv has good sound. I turned on the surround and didnt expect 2 small speakers can make it sound surround, but sure enough, sounds started to appear around my back. It would be better if it was from a proper speaker system which is allowed by the aux out on the tv, which isnt apparent in most lcd tvs. This means watching digital tv a lot more enjoyable. You can also expect to have lots of connections too. At the moment i have a Wii, original xbox, xbox 360, ps2 and my pc connected to the tv. I dont even need anything extra to split the scart. Also, if you connected your external speakers to the tv, all inputs connected to the tv will use the speakers
Pros:
picture quality, connectivity and style.
Cons:
I've heard there are some LCD problems with blue blotches on the screen when its black, but i have not had any problems.

Like the other reviews, I took a long time to decide which TV to buy, when my old CRTstopped working. After reading a number of excellent reviews on the Internet, took the plunge and went for the Sony Bravia KDL 40W2000. I am not an expert in TV, but know a good picture when I see it, as this set is really excellent. I have upgraded my Telewest box to 'TV Drive' which gives access to their HD material and (I am assured) 'upscales' normal TV to match the 1080 resolution of the Bravia panel. Anyway, what matters is the picture and it is amazing. The colours and contrast are the best I have seen to date, but then again it is the most I have spent on a TV ! I am sure you can split hairs with other sets, but for the money, I could not find another 1080 HD ready TV and am very pleased with it. So the research was worth it and the other reviews seem to support my experience.
Pros:
Picture & Sound Excellent
Cons:
None I can think of

Barrie - 12/12/2006
After reading a lot of reviews on large LCD TVs this one had the best credentials according to the Experts. I'm glad I took my time deciding as the picture on Freeview and Sky is brilliant. Watched Planet Earth the other night and the 3D effect over the Pine Forest was unbelievable, and to think this was only on Standard Def. I would have to rate it at 9.8 out of 10 as I have not yet tried it on High Def. Sound is very good and the Tru-surround gives it a better overall performance. Not sure if its delivering a surround sound as such, but cannot expect too much from two speakers. Did try a video out to see what it would look like and even that looked great. So over all I am very pleased with the purchase.
Pros:
Overall a very good LCD TV and as good as any Plasma I have seen. Great picture, sound and ease of use.
Cons:
Not a lot wrong. Perhaps the surround sound could be a little better.

I finally chose this tv over quite a few others i had been researching on the net. It was easy enough to set up, though would advise you to have help fitting to the base. (you would''nt want to drop your new tv on its face). I was impressed with the collection of various connections at the rear. I have connected a samsung upscaling dvd player using one of the two hdmi sockets and am very impressed with the picture quality and sound is very good in the surround mode. The menus are clear and easily accessible, quick changes between picture and sound modes. I would like to say at least one bad thing about this set but cant, I love it.
Pros:
Clear, colourful pictures. Great looking and stylish set.
Cons:
None

after reading every review/magazine article about plasma versus lcd i finally decided on a sony kdl 40w2000u. what agreat choice! the picture quality is unbelievable, especially in its full hd mode. the picture is so clear and the colours are so true that it makes watching my colleagues pioneer plasma a dissapointing experience. contrary to other reviews the sony handles sports very well even in non hd mode, and the sound quality is excellent without the need for a home cinema system (though one of these does add even more to the viewing experience). all in all a top product and one of the best purchases i have made.
Pros:
picture quality
Cons:
none

I love this tv it enhances every aspect of tv viewing havent even hooked it up to a hd source yet, just by hooking up to my sky + system i am more than impressed with both the picture and sound today watched star wars return of the sith on it and it was just like sitting in the cinema, setting up to sky+ and a my panasonic dvd recorder took minutes, after switching on the light sensor the picture was perfect, no wonder this tv was voted what vision and sound product of the year, definetley worth shopping around on the internet for i saved £500 on the price, im very happy with this product
Pros:
plenty of connectivity sockets picture sound design
Cons:
none i can think of

Well after reading all the reviews for the last two months bought the Sony and to be honest I am a little dissapointed. If your not thinking of getting Sky HD, an Xbox 360 or Bluray etc then unless you want a bigger screen stick with your old CRT,my last Sony CRT had a better picture than this and the sound blew this TV away. That said the HD picture with 720p on my Xbox 360 is amazing, didnt think a picture could get any clearer then think again. HD is awesome! Im unsure whether you do really need a TV with 1080p though as 720p is simply stunning, that said I havent fed the TV with any 1080p sources yet. Could have saved some money with just a 720p set and bought other items though like Sky HD. An overall summary of this TV would be I think the other 720p sets especially the Sony V series offer better value for money as 720p is good enough, especially with Sky HD only broadcasting in 720p. Do you really need 1080p?
Pros:
HD picture Lots of connections Style and Quality
Cons:
Average sound.

I would still go for plasma over any lcd, no matter how many pixels the set has.

More pixels do not equal best picture. Panasonic and Pioneer plasmas beat anything that Sony can churn out, price for price. The new Panasonic PX70 range have 1080p upscaling chips that gives almost equal results to a true 1080p picture and costs a fraction of the price. Unless you are going to sit within 3ft or so away from a 42"" screen then you won't notice the difference on a true 1080p signal anyway.

In a few years time when LCD can truly compete with the picture quality of Panasonic and Pioneer plasmas then I know whichI will stick with in the meantime. No offence to Sony but for what you get, is it really worth the money? Plus there is a lot of clouding issues reported on that model (see www.avforums.com for details)

Personally and completely in my own opinion (as i used to sell TV's etc for one of the largest distributers in the UK).

I would always go for an LCD over Plasma, the picture is ALWAYS Superior and i really don't fancy paying out for a TV with a design flaw (screen burn, amazing how easy it is to do this as well.)

LCD's generally last longer than plasma's.

If you are going too buy a HD TV, buy a true HD TV (upscaling is not really comparable) and buy a LCD.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the W and the X series, apart from cosmetic, as from the specifications they seem identical.
Also, how does the W model rate with a standard, non high definition signal and particularly with fast moving images, sport etc

Thanks for the reply.
Would you recommend the Sony models over Pioneer models- such as the PDP-427XD.
I was concerned about the resolution on the pioneer models with it being 1024x768 instead of the 1920x1080 Sony.
I imagine the Sony tv is a better longterm product...?
  reply

I have not tested the PDP-427XD but I have tested the older model and to be honest it was a excellent my only major gripe was that it was not able to take a SKY HD signal though the HDMI input this I have been told by Pioneer is not a problem with the new model. And the remote was poorly laid out.

If you are a big football or sports fan get the Pioneer as it haddles fast moving images much better than its LCD counterpart. Thats not to say the Sony LCD haddels them baddly just not as well. The KDLW2000 is a much brighter screen and haddles black levels excellent so if you are a film buff my money would deffinatly be spent on the Sony.

Quick note which might swing the purchase is that we have had several emails over the last few weeks from customers who have purchased the Sony saying how good it is.

Hope this helps.

Nice one, thanks for the input. I am thinking that the better handling of the blacks and colors will swing it, along with the res which in future I can see as being a problem for the pioneer.
Good site, keep it going!

1920x1080 is the TRUE resolution of High Definition DVD (due very soon) and of course some Sky HD broadcasts. The LCD panel used in this TV (KDL40W2000U) is the exact specification of HD, all previous LCDs had to scale this resolution to fit it on the screen as the resolution of the actual panel was lower.

Alas no more as this generation of LCD TV is line for line identical to the HD standard. HD broadcasts should look as intended - Brilliant!

Good point this about the res- I was considering the pioneer range but they are only 1024x768 res---> compared to sony full HD surely these can't compete or is this not correct??

Correct Rich - unless the panel is 1920x1080 in resolution, some scaling will have to be performed which simply means some of the picture information will have to be discarded. Obviously it would still look good however not as good as a screen with the true resolution of 1920x1080 which is pixel for pixel identical to the source HD transmission.

  reply

Well, any panel that is 1920x1080 will be better than anything of lower resolution as you are getting pixel for pixel the same as the original.

Undoubtedly the Sony LCD's tend to have very good contrast so yes this TV is a very good buy on the whole. However it's the resolution which is the prime selling point.

Hi

I'm considering buying the Sony W2000 or X2000, but will be hooking it up to a normal Sky box and the Sony DAR 100 Home Cinema System to start with. What can I expect from the picture quality without Sky HD or an HD DVD player?

Andy
  reply
Nat
19th December
A typical Sky box when connected via Scart outputing RGB will output normal PAL. Such TVs as this Sony in question would upscale this source to the resolution of the TV. i.e: It will have to create more lines to the picture. How this looks varies according to what you are watching. For example Sky movies as a source will look better than a program on Bravo, etc. (For a number of reasons). Likewise with a DVD. However if you are looking for a DVD player there are some clever ones around now which will upscale to HD resolutions with dubious results although might be better at it than the TV.

Basically buying this particular Sony HD future proofs you as much as you can currently do.

I just bought the W2000 and I am now shopping for a DVD-recorder. Would a Pioneer DVR940 with its 1080p add additional picture quality or can I trust the W2000 will enhance normal DVD sufficiently?

Walter. Until the HD-DVD -V- Blueray argument settles down I have the Bravia 40W and I have just ordered the multi region Denon 1930 DVD player. This was £199.95 and has hidef output and can upscale your DVDs to 1080p. This dvd player won best dvd in the up to £500 proce tag in 2006 what hifi and video awards. The telly won product of the year. Perfect combo for now !

Thanks for the info Wayne. Is there a similar device that can also record on hard disk, icluding MP3 and pictures? The reason why I am considering the Pioneer DVR 940 is that it can do all that and aldo enhances the non-HD sources to 1080p. It is an expensive piece of equipment though and I cannot find any reliable test results.

In response to what Aneil Bhatt mentioned - Panasonic have had quite a furious advertising campaign of late with this whole Plasma vs LCD argument. Personally Plasma will always have the screen burn issue. To my eyes I find a lot of the models have a 'ringing halo effect' to the picture although it has improved. I find LCD to give sharper pictures.

If it was my money buying right now I would always go for 1920x1080 models. Toshiba have a good model as well which recently caught my eye. I think this might be the one Brian mentioned above.

In response to Waynes' comment about upscaling. The results of upscaling will always be mixed, depending upon how good the original DVD was sourced. It's all well and good being able to upscale to 1080p however cannot match a true HD source however I agree for now and to get the best out of your current DVDs it works quite well. However don't forget all current HD players (and the Blue Ray variety) will play and upscale your existing DVD collection.

As for this Blue Ray vs HD DVD. I think price will be a determining factor in the end and currently I think Toshiba are winning with their player being roughly half the price of the Samsung equivalent. Performance wise I think there is little overall between them on a consumer level.

All these TVs are expensive items. I really cannot stress enough the benefits of 1920x1080 true panel resolution. It will pay dividends in the end. I do feel the manufacturers are playing it down a bit as there are so many lower 1024x768 models out there.
