1 hav sky hd & a panasonic saht990 dvd cinema how do i link them all together to get the best sound quality ? should i be using the digital audio (optical) input

i would like to no if at the bottom of the tv just under the on and of button should it illuminat my son has a samsung lcd like mine but the next model up to mine, and his illuminats its the slot that runs along the bottom of the tv thank you
