Have just bought one of these machines and it looks great. Not just the pictuure but the whole tv including the surround.
Only down side is that the screen makes an audible buzzing noise when it has brighter colours. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have the same buzzing problem. I called the pioneer Service line and they advised me that it is normal to have a buzzing sound. I bought the TV along with a friend, And his doesnt make as much noise. I mentioned this to the Service Dept. They are going to come and have a look.
Has ever a Pioneer serviceman come out fixed the buzzing for any of you guys?

I've just received my new PDP42XD and am very pleased with it generally. However, I'm having difficulty achieving a good picture through adjusting the picture control settings - can anyone advise some useful settings to try?
replyEddie

I read somewhere that adjusting the picture refresh rate will make a difference to the buzz. Try that.

after changing the refresh rate the buzzing is as loud as before, only the buzzing changes the tone slightly.
The guys from service are saying they have a fix for it - they are going to use some silicone to glue vibriting parts that cause the noise - will see what will happen. Anyone heard about such ""treatment""

Regarding the ""buzz"", I know this can become annoying but it helped me to adjust the setting to power save A and increase the brightness to make up for this.See what you think.

after long discussion with the service they promissed to repair it. They are not willing to change for a new piece, as they say it is a reparable deffect. On the other hand as I spoke with the technician - he has no idea how to do it - he is right now studying some knowledge base of pioneer. They will take it for repair on monday -s so we will see then...

I phoned pioneer about this problem. They said yes there can be a small buzz but it should not be intrusive and if it was they would put it right. And then the usual about them selling 000's and very little problem---blah,blah, blah.the usual guff.I thought the guy was pretty laid back about it and didn't seem v concerned.Anyway if i did buy one i would be like Victor Meldrew with Pioneer if the buzz struck.Brian

I have also been hunting in shops and online for that perfect affordable plasma 42 inch tv. I thought I had found it. Now after hearing comments about a buzzing in back of unit something one might only expect from a cheap Goodmans tv or unknown brand, I dont know what to do. Why dont Pioneer take the problem seriously? There 4270XD has such a perfect picture.
Also I phoned up Sky tv to ask about HD boxes etc how much resolution one needs on a tv to get optimal image and they told me that they had probs with Pioneer tvs women on phone wouldnt say which ones just that they had error message on the screen etc............back to drawing board I guess unless someone quietens my concerns.

Yes it is that loud. Since buying it we found out that there are a number of settings you should use between 100 (if you believe user sites) and 1000 (if you believe pioneer) hours in which you have it on very dark and burn the system in. This has helped but I am still considering returning it / asking for it to be fixed.
My friend who bought one at the same time from the same place has much less buzz so kind of luck of the draw.
Basically the screen is very nice but the buzz is from the screen itself and comes out the back of the tv. I am planning on building a little bit of a box around it so that the noise is muffled somewhat.
On the upside, it takes a lot of usage to get the fan to kick in.

I have a new 4270 which emits a loud, intrusive buzzing noise when bright images are on the screen. I find it particularly annoying because I didn't purchase this to watch sports and action movies, but more like artsy stuff and silent films (Ok, that's lame, but whatever). I set energy save to ""save 1: slightly lowers power consumption whil suppressing brightness drop level"" and the buzzing stopped *completely*. Hope this helps some of you.

Pioneer should be worried!! I for one have been and wlll continue to search for the right Plasma TV and this one is (or maybe was) at the top of my shortlist. I consider from what i have read pioneer have had the best plasma tv's around for a while and if they want to continue then they should get their house in order if they want customers to buy there latest offering, I am not going to put up with any kind of buzz and certainly not going to be without a telly if i ever had had to have it taken away for repair! so come on pioneer how about you leave a message here and put our minds at ease and tell us what you have done or doing about this problem to twist our arm into buying this box of buzz?

I am in exactly the same position and totally agree that Pioneer should be worried or otherwise explain themselves. Had it not been for these ""buzz"" comments, I would have bought one by now. I am prepared to wait a while to see if Pioneer will respond to your question. Let's hope they do or, very reluctantly, their plasma will have to drop off the top of my list.

I have the 5070. The buzz is always there, but you normally can't hear it without being close to the TV or muting the sound.
The buzz is loudest with pictures of highly contrasting areas (eg head shots against a light background) or 'graphics' blocks such as on BBC News 24 or Sky News. In these cases you can clearly hear the buzz if you're listening at a quiet (<10) volume.
Of the two suggested fixes, the increase refresh from 75 to 100 worked best by lowering the tone of the buzz. The power save 1 (and 2) didn't have that much effect on my box.

Hi, forgive me for sounding naive, i bought this tv and some of the images when watching sport seem to be very poor. Sometimes i notice blocks. Is this to do with me need a hd ready aerial? I've also noticed the buzzing which after only 2 days is very irritating. Any clues?

so... after getting the display back from service I must say that the buzz is still there. It is a bit less noisy, but still loud enough so I can hear it with muted sound to the distance of 6-7 meters!!!
The guy in service told me that they isolated some vibrating parts with some kind of silicone... and that that is all they can do - the panel will still be buzzing.
After complaining to executives of Pioneer here - I have received an email from local pioneer executive that the buzzing is NORMAL and it is stated in the manual!!! So there is no reason to take the panel back or exchange it for new one - in his words - all panels of this model are the same...
So my recomendation is - DO NOT BUY!
Anyway I will continue to fight with them...

Oh well, if that's their attitude, I won't give them two days!! I mean who want's to by a TV which is supposed to make a buzzing noise anyway. Any recommendations on the next best 42 incher please I have a couple of ideas but it would be nice to hear others before I phone a friend and make my final decision, i need to order one by the end of this week!! Don't buy the 4270. Mine has the annoying buzz too. Shame on Pioneer for releasing a product with a brain-dead design. But it seems to have been fixed in 4280 series which I also bought (Don't ask me why, long story). Very disappointed in 4270. Had I known about the buzz. I would've never had made the purchase. I wouldn't have cared how greate the picture is.

I have a pioneer 427xd plasma tv just under 2yrs old a part has burnt out,has cost so far £270 and have been told it is not cost effective to repair, since found out its a common problem with there plasma tv,s around this age,if you are going to buy a new one make sure you take out extended warranty.better still don,t buy pioneer at all.

Should have also said on the above comment that i contacted pioneer customer services and complained to them but was told even although i had spent the better part of £2700, hard luck.has anybody had this type of experience would love to hear from you to gather information for a small claims court case against pioneer.

My Pioneer had pixel failure within a few weeks of ownership and I was told this was not covered under warranty.... since having repaired I am now experiencing the loudest buzz you can imagine... tried all the noise reduction techniques mentioned but it is a waste of time.... Customer care justput me in touch with a service centre who wont even come out unless I pay £200... I have ended up putting screen in the garage and buying a B&O CRT off Ebay for £300 !!
