It shouldn't take more than about 90 seconds to get a good lock. Some car windscreens have a metallic coating that can block the signal, and I believe the Ford heated screens can cause problems for some people.

Something to try - see if gets a lock when its out of the car in a relatively clear area (not too obstructed by tall buildings) - if not, it sounds like its knackered.

PS: depending on how long it is since the device was last switched on, sometimes it can take up to 45 minutes until they start to receive properly - they use an ""almanac"" which will normally keep itself updated if used even every few weeks - but it can go out of date, meaning the device doesn't know where to start trying to figure out where it is until its had time to update itself.

Make sure you have some powerful batteries inside as it will hold the memory otherwise it can take upto 45 mins to find sats.

Is this an Andy thing - mine too. No mention on the garmin website for update to map. Maybe if you download auto updater software it will cancel the message.

No - Garmin are trying to talk you into buying updated maps... I think they're usually about $75-$125 to update, but their website isn't showing City Navigator Europe on the update list...

If you already have the V8 maps (it will tell you what version you have when you switch it on) then there isn't an update, at least not at the moment.

You have to reset the unit to clear the message by holding down the arrow, then the wheel, then the power button until it turns on. You have to keep them all pressed i.e. don't release the arrow when you press the wheel and keep the arrow and wheel pressed when you press power.

*** WARNING **** this deletes ALL your personal data, so any POI/Speed Camera/Favourites you have on there will have to be put back on again.

i spoke to garmin the other day and they told me that the i3 does require a new map update. As you said that it shows new map required but as yet it is not released yet. The sat nav is asking for it a bit early and wont be avalible until about middle of jan07. If you purchased it witin under a year ago then it is valid for a new map free of charge.
If any doubt ring garmin as they were very helpful....
This is a good little unit but i wish i could change voice on it....
The only draw back is that trhe instructions arnt much to go by as only 2 pages long...
