Camcorders
Digital Camcorders have developed so much over recent years that they are now so small and compact they can be mistaken for a digital camera. There are many different recording formats with each camcorder and they vary in price and usability in order to suit each and every one of us. The different digital recording formats include tape, DVD or hard disk and flash memory all ensuring that high quality is retained even after repeated plays. When buying a digital camcorder the main two factors to consider are the storage format and whether it is an HD model. Most camcorder manufacturers are phasing out the tape format as this is the most dated and fiddly of the storage options. Compared to a DVD or Memory card option it seems very old fashioned and messy, considering the ease of slipping a DVD (mini) or memory card into the camcorder, recording your footage and pressing playback. With these formats finding a certain selection of your footage has never been easier as you can watch on the LCD screen and skip through whole scenes rather than fast forwarding and recording hours of tape. Most camcorders can now also take still images and store them onto the memory card too. DVD camcorders are great for the convenience of videoing and transferring footage to a PC or TV and can store about 30 minutes of footage. HD camcorders use many of the storage options and will produce higher quality images and can be transferred to a PC or HD TV although it can be more difficult to edit this format and cannot be burned to a traditional DVD. Other features worth considering before buying are the zoom, optical being more important than digital as quality will be lost with a digital zoom whereas the optical zoom will capture the image and make it appear nearer. We recommend a 15x zoom for optimum results. Image stabilisation is also worth looking for especially with camcorders with a long zoom range. We also strongly recommend checking out the weight and dimensions of a camcorder before making your final decision as it needs to be comfortable for you to use.
