Sony Dvp NS30

I bought this DVD player in Norway and brought it to a friend in the US. She wants to watch and listen to Norwegian DVD's in order to learn the language. That's why she needed a player able to play both region 1 and 2. When I tried to install it, it turned out to be impossible to get a good signal when inserting a region 2 DVD. I suppose the signal was scrambled (the picture was constantly rolling). The player is supposed to work with PAL as well as NTSC signal format. What is the problem? My friend's television (Panasonic, I think) is about 10 years old. Is it too old?
