Hotpoint RLA54 Fridge Review

RLA54 seems to have a common fault deciding to become a freezer and not a fridge after only two years, DO NOT BUY ONE! Hotpoint cutsomer service have been completely useless too.

I bought a Hotpoint RLM84X fridge together with a matching freezer on 18/7/06. It leaked from week 10 and the handle broke off after week 30. Temperature problems started at teo years old which we lived with. Then it ran all the time until it stopped completeley. I paid the £100 for the call out and the first engineer said it needed a new compressor. The second engineer came and changed the gas! A week later frost formed and the third engineer turned up and condemned the machine by just looking in the door and phoning a friend. A broken phial tube apparently. The engineer was visibly embarrassed when he informed me that all they could do was offer a small discount on a new machine. Another hotpoint? Never ever again. Still, there wont be hotpoint soon as this is another example of a Bitish company producing an inferior product with even worse customer support. Just like Leyland, rover, land rover etc they compromised on quality as if there was no competition. The news will be full of ex-employees blaming the credit crunch for the failure of the business. The product is rubbish, an embarrasment to the nation. Let it fold and start making something which the british people will buy with pride and export.

We purchased this together with the freezer in October 2006 In Feb 2008 (14 months ) the fridge started to freeze produce in the salad trays and was extremely cold elsewhere despite turning the controls down to 1 it had no effect After paying £150 over ten months repair man attended and change the thermostat Repair man came again but decided that it could not be fixed. When we were sold the breakdown cover we were told that if it could not be fixed then we would be given a new machine. Don''''t you believe it. The cover has been cancelled and the payments stopped. The repair man who was excellent spoke to the technician and help desk who agreed that the phial tube was out of position and not repairable. As the machine has been in situ and not moved then this must be a design or manufacturing fault, but as out of guarantee not interested. Only good thing is that this model is not in production any more, I wonder why. This product is not of merchantable quality
