User Reviews of the Becker Traffic Assist 7914 Sat Nav / GPS Receiver

I purchased this product last year and thought it would be ideal to help out with my new job as I have to travel many miles around Devon and the roads are unfamiliar.
I have to think to myself that I was somewhat conned by the cost of the product rather than the usability that it has provided me! I find this navigation system great for roads and areas that were built over 2 years ago.
It doesn''t recognise any new roads and seems to choose the most inconvenient routes a fair few times, which is annoying when you hit city centre traffic that could have been easily avoided.
Overall, a cheap system but better can be found for the price. No updates make this product obsolete already...I wouldn''t buy this navigation system at any price as is very dated.
Pros:
Easy to use
Clear and concise
Good prediction times for route time
Cons:
No updates!!!!
Old maps
Not always best/fastest route
After a rather labourious communication with Becker I have discovered that no new maps will be made for the 7914. In other words its defunct. I was offered a deal to purchase a new model at a much reduced price but it turned out to be over £120 for the deal .
Also the company I was told to contact had no Info on the maps but thought the were probably the same as the 7914, bit pointless buying that then.
I have just seen the new version for sale at Tesco for under £100 that is less than half price! I wonder why?...I am going for a Tom Tom I know they work and maps can be updated.
Pros:
none
Cons:
Bad customer help line, and outsourcing work to small companies that dont know much about the Becker sat nav.

Maps out of date for Europe and UK by at least 2 years. Unable to update software so suggest buying a sat nav from a manufacturer that has updates available.
Pros:
Large display, easy to understand.
Cons:
Software out of date. 2gb SD card required for maps of Europe, will not load on 1 gb card.
I bought this to upgrade a built in Toyota satnav system. Build quality is good and it is easy to use, once you work out that after planning a multi point route it has to be given a name before the unit will accept it. On the whole I find the routing software is well up to the job and have had no problems in the three months I've been using it. It doesn't seem to have the strong "pulls" for motorways my earlier system had ie taking you on a long detour just so as you can use a short section of motorway. It has quite a good local speed limit database so does a better route calculation than my previous system that rated all A roads the same speed limit. It gives accurate ETA calculations - to +/- 10 minutes on a five hour journey from SW to NE Ireland ! Road networks will always change faster than these systems can keep up with, but it copes with new bits or road without being annoying and rapidly gets back on course when you return to a road in its database.
Pros:
Look and feel of display
Intelligent route planning software
Accurate ETA calculations
Cons:
none
We bought our becker traffic assist thinking it would help solve our navigation needs reducing the stress on my wife as the navigator on our planned caravan holiday route to Italy. Unfortunately though the becker screen and speaker is clear and the unit is well made the problem is in the totally simplistic routing,on many occasions we were routed off the motorway onto side roads to cut the corner so to speak, through villages and narrow roads eventually ending back on the motorway at a point we would have reached probably 15 minutes previously.Other things like area codes,it would accept the code but not address and vice versa,we didnt trust it and ignored it on many occasions. Maps were out of date and would tell you take the exits from cicles that didnt exist very confusing. We used our road maps in the end and sat nav sparingly.I think the soft ware needs revamp and updated maps. Also nothing is worse than two womens voices in cab in total disagreement about the route.
