A review of the Sony Cybershot DSC-W55 digital camera
Design
The Cybershot DSC-W55 is a stunning digital camera with a whopping great lens on the front. It may be big but this adds great character to an otherwise very plain body. We toyed with the blue model which is icy cool and has a brushed aluminium effect. The body does feel quite strong and solid although it is made from mostly plastic and it is quite chunky to hold. It is available in blue, silver, black and pink.
Features
The DSC-W55 has 7 mega pixels, 3x optical zoom, a 2.5 inch LCD screen and a viewfinder, which is very rare to find on a digital camera these days, but is very welcome on a bright, sunny day when it is hard to see the LCD screen properly. There is a smart zoom feature which increases the capacity of the zoom when shooting at lower resolutions. A small selection of built-in scene modes have been included and two image resolutions are available, one for taking 6x4" photos and the other for displaying images on a widescreen TV.
Performance
The Sony Cybershot DSC-W55 performed well in many of our tests, the best being the colour test. Colours were superbly reproduced and were bold and vibrant with natural shades enhanced. However, the W55's automatic white balance didn't impress us so much. Image noise was minimal even up to ISO 800 where it did start to show slightly. The start-up to shoot time was not bad for an entry level digicam at 1.3 seconds with photos taken at 1.4 seconds a go.
Overall Opinion
Although the DSC-W55 doesn't offer any unique features, it is a solid digicam that is a quick performer and displays great colourful and crisp images that can't be grumbled at. A good price for a good entry level digital camera.
