Review of the SanDisk Sansa E270 6GB MP3 Player

The bigger boys in the playground might put up a good fight, but we know that most of them lack substance between the ears. So when we found the ScanDisk Sansa E270, which is a whole 2GB bigger than the Creative Zen V-Plus, we wanted to see what it was made of. Design |
| We are long-term fans of the design outlay of the Sansa range, with it’s sleek black finish it fits in anywhere perfectly. The material used is more scratch-proof than that used on the iPod and some other makes. The back of the player is covered in ‘liquidmetal’ casing, giving it a strong, sturdy feel. The illuminated dial sits centrally and dominates the bottom half of the player. The 1.8-inch high-resolution TFT screen covers the top half; this is a bit smaller than other players, but just big enough in our opinion. At the bottom left hand corner you’ll find the responsive power button. |
| Features |
| The huge 6GB Sansa E270 supports Microsoft’s PlayForSure, and allows you to play more video, music and photo files than you can imagine. Video files need to be converted on your PC using the supplied software, which will accept MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, DAT, ASF, MOV and WMV. The included software is compatible with JPEG, TIFF, BMP and GIF, for conversion of image files. Once connected up to your PC, you can expect to use the drag and drop method. The USB-port doubles up as a line-in for importing music from external sources, and you’ll find the headphone jack right next door. The E270 has a MicroSD card slot, for enhancing memory capacity as your files increase. It also has a rechargeable and replaceable battery (unlike the iPod). The voice recorder function is easy to access, making it a handy little function. We especially enjoyed using the well-designed menu system, everything was easy to find and easy to use. |
| Performance |
Comparing the ScanDisc Sansa to the Creative Labs Zen V-Plus, there was not a huge amount of difference when it came to performance. The Sansa E270 provided plenty of detail, and images were razor-sharp. The video function rotates too, just like the V-Plus, making it easier to watch on this rectangular screen. Video playback was pleasurable to watch, showing a completely smooth performance. We got 18.5-hours of audio out of the rechargeable battery, and 3.75-hours of video-playback. |
| Overall Opinion |
| A halo would be the only addition that we would recommend for the Scandisc’s Sansa E270. The shining performance that this media player put on for us was hard to beat. It provides enough features and professional performance to keep the even hardest-to-please commuters happy. |
