Samsung Q30

If you are looking for an extremely portable, versatile laptop you may want to consider the Samsung Q30. If you travel with your laptop size and weight matter, so you will be pleased with the numbers here: Dimensions 288 x 198 x 24mm and weight is 1.1kg. Granted there are lighter, smaller laptops available however this model is the thinnest and lightest 12.1-inch widescreen mobile computer on the market providing a good size display and a full size keyboard.

The standard battery will keep you running for up to 3 hours and a long life battery is supplied giving up to 7 hours of power, both are “smart” batteries with lights indicating power remaining, this can be checked while the laptop is on or off. If you need more than 10 hours of battery life before you can recharge consider budgeting for an additional long life battery, which will only add another 150g in weight.

The Q30 has a 1.1GHz Ultra Low Voltage CPU using Intel Centrino technology and 2MB of Level 2 cache; it will perform well with standard applications and software, but will struggle with software using complex graphics such as games or multimedia applications. Storage is a 40GB hard drive which is respectable for such a portable machine, and if you find disk space becoming an issue Samsung have bundled an external DVD/CDRW drive for archiving, back-ups, as well as playing CDs or DVDs. A great feature is the 3 in 1 Memory Card Slot that reads SD, MMC and Memory Sticks and there is a separate CompactFlash card reader.

The Q30 is WiFi ready, supporting 802.11b and 802.11g standards and has USB 2.0 x 2 and Firewire connectivity; on the downside however Infrared and Bluetooth are not supported and there is not a slot for a PC card.

Overall Opinion

If you are looking for a light, compact and stylish laptop that you can take with you without becoming too much of a burden, the Samsung Q30 PC Laptop is the one for you. We love its super slim design and although it's not the most powerful notebook in the world, we like it. On the down side, we would have liked to see a bigger hard drive and a PC card slot.
