Review of the Samsung Digimax L70 digital camera

Samsung have excelled themselves with this gorgeous, sleek, Digimax L70. The features and functions that it has are so exciting that you will be quite literally, ripping the box open.

Design

This is, quite honestly, the best designed digital camera we have held, and looks like something that James Bond would produce from his jacket pocket. The shape of this Samsung fits into your hand perfectly and there is a neat little ledge to rest your thumb on at the right hand side. On the front there is also a ledge to rest your middle finger as you grip to hold. The zoom button is situated at the top next to your thumb so it is in easy reach whilst in action. There is a very clever and high-tech 9 pad touch key pad at the bottom on the right next to the 2.5in LCD screen. This key pad can take a bit of getting used to, but once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll never look back (see Performance). The dimensions of this ultra slender Samsung are 94mm (w) x 57mm (h) x 17.5mm (d).
Features
The Samsung Digimax L70 is equipped with a 7.2 mega pixel CCD to ensure you receive the highest quality images every time, along with the best resolution so you can print large images without a problem. It has advanced movie functions and has a recording time that is 3-4 times longer than other digital cameras due to the MPEG 4 high compression, high quality format compared to MJPEG that conventional digital cameras have. The high sensitivity ISO 800 delivers really bright and focused pictures even in low light. You could be fooled into thinking that you are using a digital camcorder with the Digimax L70 as there are so many Movie functions and editing options to choose from. You can edit and pause your movies and also use the additional functions, such as RGB control, to emphasise red, green or blue and change colour effects such as black & white or sepia. In order to obtain clearer images the Auto Macro facility automatically detects the distance of your subject and sets the focus and this mode does not need to be set for the camera to automatically take close-ups. The ASR (Advanced Shake Reduction) feature rears its not so ugly head again with this digital camera and very welcome it is too so blurry images are a thing of the past.
Performance
The main feature that keeps this Samsung individual to its competitors is the 9 key touch pad. As we mentioned it does take some getting used to but with a bit of experimenting it really is a positive menu function. Click on menu and the screen displays all options which you can scan over or click on. The playback button can be pressed to display your images and it shows a forward and back arrow and small picture in picture of your images that have been taken before and after this shot which you can click on or just view. You can also scan through the image editing options whilst taking your image or afterwards. There isn’t a menu roll so you don’t have to go back through the options to get back to the menu, just click menu. It is a simpler menu than most we have tested, you just need to be patient with it and give it some time to get used to. NV lenses are recognised as the best on the market and therefore the Samsung Digimax L70 produces natural colours with excellent resolution. This camera can automatically adjust the shutter speed depending on the shooting environment, for example, a high shutter speed will make a moving object appear still and a low shutter speed will make a moving object appear active.
What's In The Box?
Software CD, Battery Charger, Camera Strap, AV Cable, Rechargeable battery, Ac Adapter, User Manual.
Overall Opinion
The Samsung Digimax L70 is a next generation digital camera with many, many functions available. It is very reasonably priced for all that it offers and is definitely worth saving your pocket money for.
