A review of the Kodak Easyshare V705 Digital Camera

Kodak are claiming that this is the world’s smallest ultra-wide-angle-zoom digital camera, and it can capture the widest shots with exceptional clarity with its dual lens technology. The Kodak Easyshare V705 we have just got to see.

Design

With the following dimensions 101mm (w) x 49.8mm (h) x 20.4mm (d), Kodak Easyshare V705 is not the smallest of digital cameras around. It is very dinky and we like the modern but also old fashioned square and sharp style of it. It looks a bit like a dictaphone in the way that is very rectangular and has lots of buttons down one side. The flash looks sleek sitting in the corner and the central dual lens is very intriguing but looks very cool. On the reverse the 2.5in LCD has been centralised and there are very handy buttons down the left side which allow you to delete, review, share and access the menu with the touch of a single button rather than scrolling through the menu. On the right side of the LCD screen there is a joystick and a zoom control. These are both quite a bit smaller than on other digital compacts and we think they have been reduced in size to make room for the handy shortcut buttons on the other side. There is a flimsy door on the side which keeps the memory card safe and once in place is very secure. There are some buttons on the top of the camera which are really small so those of us with larger fingers may struggle to use them. These buttons are Video capture, Auto/Scene mode, Shutter release and on/off.
Features
The key feature of the Kodak V705 is definitely the Kodak Retina Dual Lens Technology. Kodak have used two lenses to capture extra wide angles, so where your average digital camera can’t quite fit in all of your family at your cousins wedding, this beauty can get them all in, even Great Uncle Albert hiding on the end of the row. The first of these magnificent lenses is a 23mm fixed ultra wide lens f/2.8 and the other is a 39-117mm f3.9-f4.4 and there is a 5x optical zoom range and a 4x digital zoom creating a total zoom range of 20x. These lenses do not protrude from the camera and we worried that the internal lenses would distort images as does happen with some digital cameras but it wasn’t the case with this one. There is a clever panoramic option in the menu along with many other scene modes and image editing options, but this panoramic mode and has two options, right to left and left to right so it really makes good use of the ultra wide capability. This camera is automatic all the way, although you can go through the menu and manually choose what you would like to be automatic, but that’s as far as manual goes with this digital camera. Kodak have done an excellent job when it comes to features as all the obvious ones are here and there are few genius ones added such as the ‘Share’ option so you can mark images and email them to friends and also ‘Album’ where you can store your best shots and go back to them quickly and easily. You can also ‘undelete’ so retrieving your accidentally deleted images is simple.
Performance
‘Auto’ should have really been in the title of the Kodak Easyshare V705 as it is able to be programmed to do almost everything automatically. The ‘Auto’ mode is excellent in most conditions with a mega quick auto-focus and almost no shutter lag. With absolutely no evidence of magenta fringing the images we have seen from this Kodak have been mighty impressive, they are so clear, detailed and the colours are spot on.  The in-camera editing really does make you feel like you have a little laptop with you when get into it, as it allows you to view before and after shots that have been edited prior to you choosing the end result. We used to have to wait until we got our images home before we could get to the fun part of editing, but now just find a park bench and away you go. The end result is clear and soft pictures as the image stabilising system reduces the effects of camera shake so there are no annoying blurry shots. We must return to the dual lenses as they really do make this camera so special and individual and the Panoramic views that can be captured are just sensational.

Overall Opinion
The Kodak Easyshare V705 digital camera is the epitome of excellent value for money at the same as being a very entertaining, ultra equipped 7-megapixel camera.
