A review of the Kodak Easyshare V610 digital camera
There are some cameras that we think are ok but haven’t got a certain feature that another has and we just can’t find the one that has it all. Well, Kodak have gone to all lengths to provide a range that will suit us all and you can choose the one that is perfect for you. Here, we check out the Kodak Easyshare V610 that is the Worlds smallest 10x optical zoom digital camera. Design |
The Kodak Easyshare V610 is stunning and ultra compact with sleek lines and a great dark exterior. The rectangular shape is very trendy with nice curved edges and a modern minimalist look. On the front is a Kodak RETINA Dual lens with a chrome lens cover than slides away when the camera is switched on and disappears into the unknown and a narrow flash in the corner. On the left side there is a small metal strap clip which just adds to the sophistication. On the top there is the power button, shutter release, flash button, camera mode, movie mode and playback mode buttons. Now on to the back, the large 2.8” LCD screen on this model is centred with buttons down either side. On the left side is the scene, delete, review, menu and share buttons and on the right side there is the zoom rocker and d-panel. The d-panel is pretty small and a bit difficult to press and we kept entering the wrong menu as we were pressing one side of the panel and it would bring up something else. On the bottom is the slide door which covers the slots for the battery and memory card very securely. The dimensions of the V610 are 111mm (w) x 55.5mm (h) x 23.2mm (d) so as you can see it is amazingly thin and can fit in to any pocket including your jeans pocket.
Features
The features of the Easyshare V610 are fantastic with the 10x optical zoom and dual lens technology you are guaranteed to achieve some outstanding results and even get prints of 30x40” with the 6.1 mega pixels. There is Bluetooth Wireless technology on board too, which enables you to send your images or movies to another compatible source with the touch of a button and without any wires or cables to be seen! A massive 2.8” LCD screen displays your images perfectly and in direct sunlight they still appear bright. We took the V610 on a very sunny autumn afternoon and even with the low sun the screen was very visible and our images looked really bright. It has the ability to rotate an image on the screen to so you can see your pictures the correct way without having to move the camera about. There are 22 scene modes to perfect any shot in almost any situation ranging from party to snow and a great panorama mode so you can make use of the telephoto lens and get some great wide shots and let the camera do the hard work by stitching it all together and it does and great job of doing it too. There is a custom mode which will save the options you have set otherwise they are lost each time you switch the camera off. The camera only offers image stabilisation when in Movie mode which is great for the shaky hand when filming for up to 80mins but not so good for your normal snaps. We were really surprised that it hasn’t been included as it is such a popular feature these days, however, it does have a blurry picture alert feature so it will let you know that your picture is blurry, but it won’t correct it for you! How daft! There is red eye removal and in-camera cropping to ensure you get the best possible finish for your memories.
Performance
The Kodak Easyshare V610 is one hell of a mover with a shutter lag time of only 0.2 seconds, which has got to be the best in it’s class. First shot can be taken after only 1.3 secs and only 1.8 secs between shots which impressed the socks off us. The images we took and printed left a lot to be desired and were not the best we’ve seen. Purple-fringing was present on some of the high-contrast edges as we have found with most of Kodak digital range which we thought they may have mastered by now but unfortunately not. Colours were clear and sharp however, digital noise was visible at higher ISO settings and some images were rather embarrassing when printed. The Easyshare dock is an optional extra, which was a bit disappointing when you have forked out nearly £300, but you can charge it up with the leads included. The on-screen menu is very simple to navigate and although you will need the written manual handy there’s not much that isn’t explained on screen. The life of the battery has got to be the most disappointing thing about the camera and we only managed to jam 130 shots into it. Compared to 600 shots on the Nikon Coolpix L3, this is pants.

Overall Opinion
Initially, we were mega impressed with the Kodak Easyshare V610 camera, it looks good and performs quickly, but the images we achieved were not great and there was a slight lack of popular features. Quite expensive or what your getting, but worth a look.
