Humax PVR Video Recorder: Reviewed by Peter Freeman

editor This is a great, simple to use, piece of kit.

I previously had a Humax Freeview Box, which worked well and was easy to use. Deciding an added hard disc recording facility would be useful, I checked the Which Best Buy recommendations and there was the new Humax PVR. It sets up like a dream and is easy to adapt to make your favourite channels easily available. The picture and sound quality are as good as you would expect from a digital machine.

One of the best features on the Humax PVR is the ease of timer recording. Its programme guide is easy to access and all you have to do is click on the programme you want to record. That''s it! You can also have more control over the exact times that you want to record by a manual time record facility.

The quality of the recorded programmes is excellent, as good as the original. You can also listen to and record digital radio in the same way. It is easy to check how much disc space you have used. Each recorded programme is shown clearly with its title channel and length. The playback can be easily controlled and you can fast forward back and forward at varying speeds. You can also protect your recording from accidental deletion. It is possible to edit recordings, either deleting sections or splitting the recording. I have not mastered the deletion process yet!

The design of the unit is OK. I am not keen on the silver box norm of current consumer electronics, but it isn''t too unattractive. The remote control has a good range of functions and is easy to learn to use, but the quality of the button presses is poor. 2 Scart sockets give flexibility of connection to other units and there is an in and out facility for the RF aerial signal. There are also a range of audio outputs for Hi-Fi amplifiers and home cinema. I particularly like the twin Freeview tuners which allow you to record one programme when viewing another. Even cleverer, you can record two programmes at the same time. It is even possible to view a third recorded programme while recoding two others. It is amazing what you can do with just one disc drive.

In all, this is an excellent unit, which fully deserves the Which Best Buy recommendation. I used the Unbeatable facility to receive an email when the best price dropped to my target price. How clever!

I really recommend that you purchase this machine if you want something quick and simple to replace your trusty video recorder, and much better picture quality too. I think it is the ideal product for someone who is not too keen on technology but wants to join the digital age. Believe me, it really is easy to use and the sound and picture quality are excellent.
