Review of the Fujitsu Stylistic ST5032 Tablet PC

With five other siblings all competing strongly in the Tablet PC market, the Stylistic ST5032 is not alone. The key to Fujitsu’s decade of Tablet PC success is their understanding of the importance of mobility. The 21st century doesn’t excuse people being office or home-bound, you can now run a business from almost anywhere imaginable, especially with the Stylistic ST.

Design

The first thing we noticed when we got our hands on the Fujitsu Stylistic ST5032 Tablet PC was how little it weighed. It’s one of the lightest around, weighing in at a mere 1.6kg it’s perfectly mobile. The dominating 12.1 inch XGA TFT screen is surrounded by a smart titanium and black design. It’s nice that it looks as expensive as it actually is. The Stylistic ST comes with a wireless keyboard, transforming it into a full desktop PC when docked on, and surprisingly, it still looks good. It’s pleasing dimensions are 12.76in width, 8.66in depth and 0.98in height. It is perfect for perching on the display of the exercise bike whilst sending those important early morning or late night emails. There is an SD slot for extra memory allowance and 6 quick launch buttons for applications and security control.

Features

The great features list reinforced the great impression that the Stylistic ST provided with its design. It has the latest Intel 915GM chipset and DDR2 memory modules and 512 MB SDRAM memory. We were pleased to learn that it also has the Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900. You’ll want to get wireless at home and hope that your favourite jaunts already have it installed, as the Stylistic ST offers wireless connectivity and is Bluetooth enabled too. The native screen resolution is 1024x768, and with a transmissive outdoor display you can use it indoors and outdoors without any problems. For the security conscious amongst you - the myriad security features will excite you, they include BIOS lock, Hard Disk Lock, Stylistic Lock, Anti-Theft Lock Slot, Smart Card, Trusted Platform Module, Fingerprint Sensor for the fingerprint recognition technology (Fort Knocks seems like a burglar‘s dream in comparison). Audio is competently covered by SigmaTel audio. The included software spec is great for the price, with Microsoft Experience Pack for Tablet PC, Fujitsu Hardware Diagnostic Tool, Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0, Fujitsu Update Navi and Acronis True Image. The software CD ROM that’s included provides you with Norman Virus Control and Norman Personal Firewall for that bit of added security (like you really need it!).

Performance

After a quick play with the Stylistic ST notebook using the wireless network we linked up to the internet at the gym and at home and sent a few emails without any problems. The thin design makes it awesome for the gym, being so light-weight was a bonus too, especially for a busy day on foot. We used it outdoors without any problems, the screen is completely competent. The 1024x768 native screen resolution is low for the price but it didn’t put the dampers on its performance. The fingerprint recognition was fun to set up and easy to use, it was probably one of our favourite features. When requesting certain actions the Stylistic ST was slow to respond, we put this down to the Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 using system RAM.

Overall Opinion

Design and security are the biggest selling points for the Stylistic ST. The fact that it is so thin and light make it a notebook ready for use almost anywhere which is obviously a very important feature for mobile professionals. The screen worked well and overall performance was impressive. We would definitely recommend this tablet PC, however it is a bit pricy. You can save a bit of money by choosing a bulkier design like the Acer TravelMate C312XMi.
