Without changing the name, Apple has upgraded the iPod Nano by changing its size and colour options and has included the most welcome feature of all, Video. Here we take a look to see if it was worth the overhaul.

Design

Its certainly shorter and fatter than before with new dimensions of 69.8mm x 52.3mm x 6.5mm and a weight of a mere 49.2g, making it the thinnest MP3 player the Apple giants have ever created. A larger, brighter 2” display with a 320x240 pixel resolution at 204 pixels per inch which is the most of any Apple display, ever (so they say). It also makes it 65% brighter than before. The new Nano retains its polished silver back and has an aluminium top which is available in five new colours, silver, green, blue, red and black.

Features

As we said the newest and bestest feature has got to be the Video playback which allows you to watch up to 5 hours of movies, TV, Music videos and pod casts and with a bigger brighter screen to watch it on tops the lot. CoverFlow cheers it up with its great attractive design, displaying your album covers and all you need to do is flick through them to find your choice. Flip the cover and the album song list will be displayed to you for extra delights. New games have been designed for you in the shape of the iQuiz, Vortex and Solitaire which all provide fun in those time filling moments, in the dentist waiting room etc. The 4GB Nano will allow you to store up to 1000 songs or 2000 on the 8GB model as well as provide 24 hours of music playback and up to 5 hours of video playback.

Performance
The Video performance along with stunning sound from the Nano was a dream come true. The images were clear, crisp and bright and even though we were watching on such a small screen, movies and TV shows were still enjoyable and entertaining. The sound was loud and sharp and there are more then 20 equalisation presets to choose from to boost the bass or just for enhancements. The menu system has undergone some minor developments as the screen is now split into two sections. The left half shows the menu list and the right side shows the album cover of the ‘Now Playing’ artist.
Overall Opinion
The new iPod Nano has some great new features and a great new design, however some extra on-board memory would have put the icing on the cake as the stingy 4GB or 8GB does not allow room for movement. The only thing that disappointed us, so not a bad job from Apple.
