Sony's PSP Goes Back to School for Latest Education Incentive

By introducing the PSP into the education system, Sony is entering a completely new forum, and will subsequently increase sales.  However, the reasoning behind the move seems less money orientated, a Sony UK boss Ray Maguire was on hand to explain the thinking behind the new feature, telling the audience, "Up until now, it's not been right for us to be in this space - the technology and the delivery medium were not there. Today, I believe that we are there for the right reasons.” (erm, money?)

PSP goes back to school with Sony's latest education incentive
In the classroom, the new ‘educated PSP’ will provide an Internet-based delivery medium, providing wireless access to pictures, videos and general internet browsing.  This visionary movement from Sony will offer the chance to listen to poems, plays, foreign language recordings, and other news feeds.

Digital additions to the classroom are always welcomed by teachers and Local Education Authorities (LEAs), so Sony can expect a big interest.  Since the introduction of the interactive whiteboard to the classroom technology market it appears to have gone very quiet, until now. Head of the technologies unit at the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) Doug Brown commented: “What is becoming quite clear is that games in education have a significant part to play.  "A range of activities that are now happening in schools are making good use of games to teach very difficult conceptual topics, and to take children to places where otherwise perhaps a teacher might not be able to take them."

What do you think? Should kids be playing games, or do they spend enough time gaming at home?  We’d like to hear your comments.
