Samsung announces the world’s first “Optical Joystick” phone
Samsung Electronics has revealed in Seoul the first mobile phone to feature an optical joystick: the new Samsung SCH-V960.
| Samsung has taken the world of mobile technology by surprise once again with the launch of the new Samsung V960, which promises to revolutionise the way users interact with menus on mobile phones. The new “Optical Joystick” will allow users to navigate through the menu by moving a cursor with their finger, similar to a mouse’s cursor on a PC. Optical sensors will read and react to user’s finger movement, given the user a complete hassle free navigation. It looks like this is the end of the four-way navigation system used on the majority of mobile phones in the market. Users will be able to click directly on icons that appear on My Screen, gaining access to frequently used menus such as photo album, messaging and music menu. | ![]() |
The new Samsung V960 will also include a “Smart Lighting” feature that will control the brightness of the LCD screen and keypad. This “Smart Lighting” feature will protect users from eye strain and it will minimise power consumption, which means longer battery life. The Samsung V960 is packed with features, which include a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, MP3 Player, Document viewer and microSD external memory. Kitae Lee, President of Samsung’s Telecommunication and Network Business said: “As the importance of user friendly interface increases, Samsung is researching and developing methods that enhance intuitive use of mobile phones. Samsung will continue to combine innovative ideas and the latest technology that will benefit our end users” | |
