Philips Televisions launch their new range of Ambilight LCD TVs. Philips have anounced the launch of the Perfect Pixel HD Engine, on the new 9632D and 9732D series in LCD screen sizes ranging from 32-inch to 52-inch, Philips will be introducing a new advanced, powerful picture processing system. The arrival of HD Sources and 1080p Full HD LCD panels has put an even higher emphasis on image processing quality – as the most important element in defining overall picture quality. The Perfect Pixel HD Engine builds upon the already impressive performance of previous Philips systems such as Pixel Plus 3 HD, to offer superb resolution and detail, while also introducing new technologies, such as 100Hz Clear LCD and HD-Natural Motion, to offer outstanding motion reproduction and contrast levels. The Perfect Pixel HD Engine brings together a suite of Philips picture quality improvement technologies including: 100Hz ClearLCD, Digital Natural Motion, Horizontal & Vertical Luminance Transient Improvement (LTI) and Colour Booster with 14-bit processing. And while the numbers maybe hugely impressive – with 6.2 million pixels resolution, 8,000:1 contrast ratio, 4 trillion colours and the fastest response time of any LCD TV at just 3ms – they don’t give the full story of how the Perfect Pixel HD Engine redefines the reference standard for flat TV. In fact, the Perfect Pixel HD Engine uses full 10-bit digital processing, capable of handling up to 248 million pixels per second to making it the most advanced video-signal processing system on the market. |  |
Perfect Pixel HD’s proprietary Horizontal & Vertical LTI process works at the sub-pixel level to increase the number of lines and pixels per line to precisely match the resolution of the display panel. The Perfect Pixel HD Engine also goes a step further by changing the luminance value of each individual pixel to match the surrounding pixels in the signal, resulting in a much sharper and more natural picture. The Perfect Pixel HD Engine also includes a Colour Booster system with 14-bit colour processing capable of generating a palette of 4 trillion colours. Unlike other systems, the Colour Booster calculates colour saturation increase per pixel to avoid producing over saturated and unnatural skin tones or white-tone shifts. Philips’ 100Hz ClearLCD technology addresses a common limitation found in many ordinary LCD TVs – motion artifacts and blurring in fast-moving pictures. The Overdrive Control system reduces the physical response time of the liquid crystals by increasing the voltage across the panel, allowing 100Hz ClearLCD to cut the overall response time to just three milliseconds. The 100Hz ClearLCD system also tackles the ‘sample and hold’ problem which is presented as a stepped frame change. By doubling the frame rate, and thereby reducing the time each frame is shown, 100Hz ClearLCD recreates the continuous tracking of images much preferred by the human eye. Philips has also addressed another issue with LCD technology: contrast performance. Dynamic Contrast enhancement uses an intelligent dimming backlight to reduce the effect of light leakage in dark scenes thereby giving deeper black levels with increased details. With Dynamic Contrast the differences between dark and light parts of the image are also digitally enhanced, without any loss in fine detail, further boosting the 8,000:1 contrast ratio. Motion judder, caused by the low frame rate within movie material, has also been removed thanks to a new HD version of Philips award winning Digital Natural Motion (DNM) system. Most Flat panel TVs simply show each picture within the movie twice, however the number of actual motion changes stays the same causing the classic motion judder problem. Digital Natural Motion uses interpolation techniques to measure and estimate the speed and direction of objects and create new fields with corrected motion positions. The Perfect Pixel HD engine features the new HD-Natural Motion system capable of handling sources with five times higher resolution and using a larger motion detection window while also correcting both the luminance and chrominance signals. Thanks to HD-Natural Motion, images are displayed razor sharp but motion changes are presented as smooth, steady and fluid. The result of all the elements embodied in Philips Perfect Pixel HD Engine is a Full HD 1080p display, delivering a super sharp resolution of 6.2 million pixels, with superb contrast levels and exceptional motion reproduction – the perfect display platform for all HD sources. To provide a truly immersive viewing experience, the sets also benefit from the latest generation of Philips’ acclaimed Ambilight system. Ambilight now uses LED lighting technology which delivers greater colour saturation and consumes less power than previous versions but also enables a more compact design.
