New Digital Cameras Unveiled at CES 2009

Kodak will be introducing the Z980.  This is a 12-megapixel camera which boasts a 24x zoom lens. The 24x lens incorporates optical image stabilisation and starts at 26mm.  Features include a 3 inch LCD screen, hot shoe for an optional Kodak P20 flash, a vertical shutter release and detachable vertical grip for portrait-mode shooting.  The Z980 is due to hit the shops in spring 2009.  Kodak will also be introducing 3 new point and shoots in its M-series line, these are to include the M380 a 10 megapixel camera with a 5x zoom and a 2.7 inch LCD, the M340 a 10 megapixel with a 3x zoom and a 2.7 inch LCD Screen.  These cameras are due to be available in February and March.

Pentax have two new low priced, point and shoot cameras, the Optio P70 and the Optio E70, both cameras are due for sale in February.  The 12 megapixel P70 also features a 4x zoom, 28mm lens, 2.7 inch LCD and video at 15fps.  Aperture settings range from f/2.6 to f/5.8 and the ISO range is from 64 to 6400, though ISO 3200 and 6400 only available at 5 megapixel resolution.  The camera also features a Vertical snap mode which allows the user to take photos in a similar way to taking photos on a mobile phone, using the 4 way pad and ok button at the rear of the camera instead of hitting the shutter.  Smile and blink detection, image recovery and 90 decorative frames are also handy features of this camera. The less expensive E70 has been designed with new users in mind.  Features include 10 megapixel sensor, 2.4 inch 112,000 pixel LCD, 3x optical zoom and the same ISO range as the ISO.  It has large buttons and takes AA batteries and like the P70 it also has smile detection and the framing features.  Other features the cameras share are Pixel Track Shake Reduction and a face detection system which can reportedly recognise up to 32 faces in 0.03 seconds.

Olympus are accounting for nearly a third of the total cameras being introduced at CES 2009, including a record setting ultra zoom and also 2 cameras featuring the "tap control" feature which was introduced with the Olympus 1050 SW last year.  The SP-590UZ has a 26x optical zoom, lens equivalent to a 26mm-676mm lens in 35mm photography.  Olympus combines sensor-shift image stabilization with ISO-boosting digital image stabilization to produce sharp photos with this extreme ultra-zoom. The SP-590UZ features a 12 megapixel resolution and offers full manual, aperture-priority and shutter-priority shooting but is also friendly for new users. The LCD is 2.7 inches with 230,000-dot resolution and the SP-590UZ is scheduled for shipment in March.  The stylus-9000 offers a 10x digital zoom and a 12 megapixel sensor with the LCD using HyperCrystal technology, HyperCrystal lll.  This technology allows some of the light which hits the front to to penetrate and reflect back from behind which brightens the LCD in bright conditions.  The Stylus-7000 is a more compact version of the 9000 and has a 7x optical zoom, 12megapixel resolution and a 3 inch HyperCrystal ll LCD.  The Tough 8000 is a robust camera which can survive 33 feet under water, a 6.6 foot fall, 220 pounds of pressure and freezing temperatures, the Tough 6000 as the numbers suggest can survive a little less, 10 foot under water and a 5 foot drop.  Both feaure a 3.6x optical zoom and sensor shift image stabilization.  The new Stylus 550WP has a 10 foot water resistance, 10 megapixel and 3x zoom.  Three new lower cost cameras are the FE-5010 featuring 12 megapixels, 5x zoom, sensor shift image stabilisation and has a 2.7 inch LCD.  The FE-3010 has 12 megapixels, 3x zoom and 2.7 LCD and the FE-3000 has 10 megapixels, 3x zoom and 2.7 inch LCD.  All cameras are due for sale in January and February.

Olympus Stylus 'Stylish' 7000 digital camera


A new animated photography feature called Dynamic Photo will be demonstrated today by Casio president Kazuo Kashio, using the company's proven high speed burst-mode technology to create a multi-frame animation of a moving subject.  Taking a separate image of the background, which is then dropped out within the camera creates a clip of the subject which can be overlaid on a still image background, creating a moving image which can be used greeting cards etc.  Two new high speed cameras the Casio EX-FC100 and the EX-FS10 which will both shoot at 30 photos per second and are also able to take ultra slow motion videos at 1000 frames per second, both are promised to be available at consumer prices.

Samsung introduce 4 new cameras the HZ10W, the TL100, the SL102  and the SL420.  The key feature of the HZ10W is a 10x optical zoom lens with both optical and digital image stabilisation.  Video features include 720 high-def video capture at 30 frames per second and the ability to pause and re start while shootingwithin a single file.  The LCD is 2.7 inches with 230,000 dot resolution.  Available in January.  The TL100 is a thin pocket size model which shoots at 12.2 megapixel resolution.  It features 3x optical zoom, digital image stabilization, a 2.7 inch LCD and will available in the spring.  There are two new cameras in the SL Series, the SL420 and the SL102.  The SL420 has a 5x lens , optical and digital stabilization and a 2.7 LCD, the SL102 has a 3x zoom with digital only stabilization and a 2.5 inch LCD.  Both available in the spring.

Sony have introduced two new low priced point and shoot cameras in their Cyber-Shot range, the S950 and the Cyber-Shot W220. The S950 has 10 megapixels, 4x zoom lens with an aperture range of f/2.5 to f/5.6 and a 2.7 LCD screen.  The Cyber-Shot W220 features a 12 megapixel image sensor, a wide angle 30mm lens with 4x zoom lens and optical image stabilization.  Both available in March.
