Hype Or Is FreeSat The Future?

Freesat has been getting a lot of press over the last couple of weeks, we wanted to find out what all the hype was about.

Basically FreeSat is a joint venture between the BBC and ITV. The service offers Free satellite connection for a one off payment (£45), the service currently has 80 channels several of which are HD including ITV's HD Channels.

To get set up with Freesat you will need a satellite dish (you can use you old SKY dish but please check first.) and a FreeSat set-top box. At the moment Freesat is only being sold through Argos, John Lewis, Comet and Currys. Expect to see independent online retailers selling it soon.

Freesat has big plans, it intends to offer access to on-demand programming via broadband TV services such as iPlayer and Kangaroo. Mark Thompson , speaking at the press launch of Freesat today, said the service was aiming to swiftly offer viewers broadband Internet access through an in-built Ethernet connection in set-top boxes.

"The long-term goal of Freesat is to connect to broadband and the internet [to make] services such as the iPlayer and Kangaroo accessible through boxes like this," he added.

This all sounds good lets dump SKY and get free satalite TV. If only it was that easy, SKY still hold the rights to some of the worlds best selling shows including LOST and Simpsons as well as Premiership Football.

And for that reason alone I can't see customers swapping there SKY boxes for FreeSat boxes with any real urgency.

Here at Unbeatable we wish FreeSat all the sucess in the world and thank them for bringing HDTV to the masses.

You may be right that current Sky users won't jump ship for Freesat, but there are plenty of people out here who haven't got a wonderful (or any) terrestrial digital service, don't have Sky and would be interested in giving the new satellite service a whirl. Especially with some HD services thrown in.

Willing to give it a go especially for the free HD content. A good satellite digibox for SD and HD for only £150 ( equivalent to 9 months Sky subscription with no HD ) plus I'll use my existing Sky dish. Had to stop my SKY subscription as it just kept rising and rising and I wouldn't even be able to get the BBC and ITV HD broadcasts, which should be free to air, without paying SKY a lot of money every month. Only regret is that National Geographic and Discovery have not decided to come over to Freeview or Freesat but they'll learn when the majority of normal viewers abandon SKY and their unrealistic subscriptions especially in the current financial climate when family budgets will be focused on necessities - SKY's initial investment in technology must have been repaid by now so why can't they lower their monthly subscriptions.

Just got Humax HD Freesat from Comet for £149. Very impressed - easy setup and true 1080 hd through supplied hdmi cable (yes - supplied!). Also included is scart cable and component cables as well. Quick channel scan and got 56 TV channels and 76 radio channels. Using old sky dish - just unplugged from old sky receiver and plugged into Freesat - worked straight away. Only one HD channel at present - BBC-HD, but more to follow soon. There is no connection charge or payment - just buy the receiver (and installation if new dish needed at £79) and that's it for life - how good is that. Major bonus is that sky don't get any money! Whatever happened to their monopoly.......?

As I only have one LNB cable coming from my sky dish, will I have to get another one fitted to allow me to receive HD from my freesat box ?.

No,

This is the FEE$AT service $KY offer. Its basically a Sky+ box (2 tuners) with HD encoders. this allows you to record one channel whislt watching another.

NOT required to view FREESAT HD.

The down side is all those shopping channels and religious channels , just hope that if Freesat is a success with viewers some of those pay channels on Sky will decide to go FTA on Freesat when their contracts expire with Sky. Although I do quite like the Zone channels you know like Zone Reality etc and I'm sure Zone horror will come over eventually. But I would like to see Channels like the UKTV etc go free to air but I don't think the content on UKTV is worth paying for to many repeats not enough new content Like some of the Fools and Horses Eps have been repeated for years. But would hope they would consider FTA in the future
