Google Wave is Dead in the Water - Development Axed
It's a sad time for dedicated Google followers around the world, as they watch the search giant pull the plug on the Google Wave platform. The ripples will be felt across the globe. HA! sorry we couldn't resist, there are so many jokes we couldn't resist. But on a serious note, it's a shame to see the promising future of messaging the digital collaboration fall flat on it's face.
After such an impressive build up and a lot of hype about the platform at 2009's Google I/O event we were really hoping to see some great thing from Wave, but poor user adoption and lack of development seems to have been its downfall. We saw the potential and so did many others, but are the general public ready to switch from emails to waves? It seems the answer is 'NO'. Google didn't help themselves by building it up but not following it through, perhaps the growing popularity of the Android OS and the Google Nexus One smartphone had something to do with it, after all it recently became a bigger seller than Apple's iPhone product line.
Then there's Google Buzz, after the recent privacy controversy surrounding Google's 'Twitter Killer' it's no wonder people were reluctant to try any other new Google services. With poor adoption of Google Buzz and it's damaged reputation it seems as though it could go the same way as Wave unless the search giant can figure out a way to push mass adoption for a second time, Android integration perhaps? Built-in functionality for our HTC Desire smartphone's would be great Possibly, but they seem to be waiting for the dust to settle on the whole 'privacy thing' first, so we'll have to wait and see.
Are you sad to see Google Wave dry up? Or maybe you've invested heavily in the platform for your business and now you're worried about the effects of its abandonment? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below...
