Google Takes a Stand in China
Years of cyber attacks by the Chinese Government and a massive infiltration attempt against Google and many other tech companies had Google saying enough is enough. Google has responded to the Chinese attacks through a message via blog post explaining that they will be renegotiating the agreement they have with China. They will be discussing the basis on which an unfiltered search engine could exist. Google feels that China was benefiting from having Google.cn even though it was somewhat censored because they believed that access to some information was better then none at all. If Google and China can't come to an agreement, Google is willing to shut down Google.cn and their offices in China. Although Google heavily implies the Chinese government is the party behind the attacks, they don't actually clearly state it.
The following was said by Google:
In mid-December, we detected a highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China that resulted in the theft of intellectual property from Google. However, it soon became clear that what at first appeared to be solely a security incident—albeit a significant one—was something quite different.
