O2 has struggled with the demand for the new 3g iPhone - but we finally get our hands on one. O2 launched the new 3G iPhone this morning at 8.02am, but it didn't go as smoothly as expected after the O2 customer managment software crashed several times under the strain for those looking to upgrade. It took us over an hour queueing at a high street retailer to purchase one this morning after joining the queue at 7:15. The 3G iPhone has already sold out nationwide according to the latest news, but we have heard that Carphone warehouse supposedly have 2,000 in their central warehouse awaiting store delivery. 16GB models are proving to be extremely hard to find, with many stores reported to have only 1 or 2 delivered for sale. Anyway enough about all the problems lets have a look at whats changed. The back is now piano black plastic instead of aluminium. What you can't see in the comparison pictures is a few scrapes, scuffs and dents in the 2G iPhone, especially at the corners - the new one may be more dent and scrape resilient than aluminium, but the phone feels less 'solid' in your hand.

The new model is slightly thniner and lighter than the previous model, and the silver buttons on the side add a bit of bling.

The 3G icon although only a small logo on the screen means a hell of a lot in terms of performance. We were suprised at how much quicker the new iPhone is compared to other 3G phones at accessing web pages. Also new with the 3G iPhone is the inclusion of the Apps Store icon, which previously was only available as a firmware upgrade for the 2G iPhone. We will be doing a full review of the iPhone Apps Store which will be available as of next week. |
