EMI Launches OnLine Music Store
| Music Label EMI has started the ball rolling by becoming the first producer to offer music for download online. |
| With so many online music stores, EMIs announcement sounds a bit ‘last season’, but there are a few twists in the tale to get excited about. Where popular music download sites such as Apple’s iTunes and Napster charge for files that have limits, for example digital rights management (DRM) which stops users copying files for friends, well EMI is promising higher-quality tracks without the restrictions previously known. | | | EMI’s CEO Eric Nicoli is excited by the decision to go online, he said: “We believe that offering consumers the opportunity to buy higher-quality tracks and listen to them on the device or platform of their choice will boost sales of digital music.” The move to combat the effects of piracy, which are currently affecting EMI’s in-store sales, have roused interest at a joint press conference with Apple, where head of iTunes announced they will be selling EMI’s records on their site. All EMI songs bought on iTunes will cost the normal 99p, but will be available for download on all media players, unlike other iTunes tracks which will only play on specific MP3 devices. We're not in the know as to when the launch will be, but we'll be keeping an eye and an ear out for any news, if you know more be sure to let us know.
