Bill Gates unveils the new Windows Home Server at CES 2007

The launch of Windows Home Server is a huge step forward into Mr. Gates’ idea of a “wired home” and it comes as result of the need for a central home device that stores media and manages home digital devices.

The new Windows Home Server is a software platform designed to help families with multiple PCs connect their home computers, digital devices and printers, in order to easily store, protect and share their photos, music, videos and documents.

Users of the Windows Home Server will be able to automatically back up every Windows Vista or Windows XP-based computer in the home and completely restore a PC to an earlier time. This will help families to easily solve problems with their home PCs. For example, if your Internet stops working…simply restore the PC to an earlier time when Internet was working and “voila”…problem solved.

Windows Home Server users will be able to use a personalized Windows Live Internet address to connect to Windows Home Server from outside of the home. This means that they will be able to share photos, music and videos stored at home with friends all over the world. They will also be able to use their Xbox 360 to view or listen to digital media stored on Windows Home Server.

The new Windows Home Server is a software platform designed to be an “always on” device in the home, giving independent software developers the opportunity to create innovative products for the digital home, like home automation systems or security solutions.

At CES this week AMD is announcing the AMD LIVE! Home Media Server, a reference design platform for Windows Home Server, and later this year, HP plans to launch the HP MediaSmart Server, powered by Windows Home Server software.
