Asus XG Station launched at CES 2007

Asus’ booth this week at CES 2007 in Las Vegas was crowed with people wanting to have a look at the new Asus XG station and we didn’t want to miss out, so queued for a while and we have to say that it was worth the wait.

The XG Station is the world's first docking station to provide a standard PCI Express slot for additional graphics computing power on notebook computers with Express Card slot, delivering VISTA Premium performance.

The Asus XG Station will allow users to “upgrade” the graphics card of their notebook externally. If your notebook comes with an average integrated graphics card but you still want to enjoy 3D gaming on it, the XG Station is the answer. Just plug your notebook into the XG Station and enjoy 3D gaming at its full potential.

Asus demonstrated the capabilities of the XG Station at its booth by connecting it to an average notebook with average integrated graphics card and they put it next to the same notebook model but without being connected to the XG Station. The difference was huge. While the notebook connected to the XG Station handled 3D gaming with no problems what so ever, the one not connected to it could not cope with it. It struggled and the picture kept freezing.

The Asus XG Station is currently equipped with an NVIDIA 7900GS and can support other PCI express graphics cards. It comes with an external LCD display which provides information on clock speed, temperature, fan speed, as well as the ability to tweak the graphics card itself.

The only thing we didn’t like about the XG Station is the fact that it’s powered externally, which takes a bit of the portability out of your laptop. But that’s the price you have to pay for good graphics…

The Asus XG Station will be available in the second quarter of 2007.
The price? No one knows yet…
