Apple and EMI announce DRM-free downloads
This is the news we have all been waiting for, Apple and EMI have joined forces to announce that downloaded tracks will not be locked to your iPod’s and will be DRM-free. Digital Rights Management (DRM) has held the key to all downloaded tunes and has, up until now, ensured that they cannot be copied between devices and once paid for and downloaded will only be available on the device it is on.
So now they have unleashed the power of digital music transfer and are enabling us purchase tracks for an increased price of 99p per track, however the quality also has incurred an increase too making tracks 256kbps instead of the usual 128kbps. You’ll be pleased to know that cost of full album downloads will stay the same. We are sure that many of you are asking the question, what about the tracks we have already downloaded? Can they be upgraded to become DRM free? Well, we have the answer and that is, yes. However, undoubtedly there will be small fee for this, but if it means that your whole collection will be DRM free, surely it will be worth it.
| | Apple is leading the way with iTunes and EMI have announced that their entire catalogue will be available DRM-free on iTunes by May. So we just prey and hope that more record labels will follow suit to provide us with DRM-free music downloads for the future.
