Canon Explained

Canon Explained
Canon is the producers of great cameras - it’s simple.  What’s not simple is deciphering the difference between ranges and what they offer.  We found that by looking at the camera’s specification we were non the wiser so we took it upon ourselves to investigate the difference.

What ranges are available?
The three ranges of Canon digital camera are:
Powershot S
Powershot A
Ixus

Is this the same worldwide?
No, take the Ixus for example, in Japan they call it the Ixy, and in the USA they call it the Elph.  On our website where you see the description Canon Powershot SD550 / Ixus 750 Digital Camera, this is an Ixus not a Powershot, the first part is the American model name.

What is the difference?
The main differences are price, mega pixels and design.  But there is a simple rule to learn first:

The higher the model number - the higher the mega pixels, for example:

Model

Powershot S2
Powershot S3
Powershot S80

Megapixels

5.3
6.2
8.3

So, what is the difference between the three ranges?

Powershot-S Range
Cameras in this range are highly specified, they generally have more mega pixels, they are the most expensive in the Canon ranges.

Powershot-A Range
These cameras are the average all-rounders, they have average specifications and offer an average amount of megapixels. Cameras in this range are the least expensive of all Canon cameras.

Ixus Range
This range is for the style conscious.  Ixus cameras are the best looking out of all Canon’s offerings.  They have the same amount of megapixels as the Powershot-A range but you’ll pay more as they look better.
