Sony Explained They’re one of the world’s biggest brands. Sony generally signifies quality, style and oomph in the specie kind of way. So what are the differences between their cameras? After all they all say Cyber-shot digital cameras. What ranges are available? The ranges of Sony digital cameras are: DSLR A100 Cyber-shot T Cyber-shot W Cyber-shot N Cyber-shot P Cyber-shot S Cyber-shot H Cyber-shot R Is this the same worldwide? Yup, where ever you go in the world Sony doesn’t change, a Cyber-shot camera in the UK is a Cyber-shot digital camera in the US. Makes life much easier doesn’t it!
What is the difference? It’s Sony so the biggest difference is the most obvious, the design, followed by the spec and price. Their latest range is the T series and the W series and its immediately obvious the biggest difference between these two is the design. The Sony Cyber-shot T cameras are very slim, sleek and sexy in design with a static zoom. On the other hand the Cyber-shot W range is more traditional looking with a telescopic lens. In terms of megapixels, a simple rule to follow seems to be the higher the model number, the greater the pixel. So taking the DSC-T series the larger the number following T, the higher the pixels. Model Cyber-shot T30 Cyber-shot T9 Cyber-shot T7 | Megapixels 7.2 6 5.1 | |
So, what is the difference between the ranges? DSLR A100 This is the Sony digital SLR camera and come with a high 10.8 pixel, with a 2.5 inch screen and lots of functions for a photographer wanting a professional finish. The only difference between the DSLR A100, DSLR A100K, and DSLR A100W are lenses. With the A100 you’re only paying for the body, the K means you get a single lens kit while the W provides you with twin lens kit. Cyber-shot T series This is the sexy Sony range and in terms of style are a close rival to Canon’s Ixus. The cameras are ultracompact, slim, in stylish aluminum bodies and come with a great spec for something so small. These range from 5.1 megapixel up to 7.2. The latest model, the DSC-T30 has a large 3 inch LCD while the others have the usual 2.5 inch screen as well as the Carl Zeisse 3x optical zoom lens, the STAMINA battery life and high ISO.
Cyber-shot W Series This range is similar to the Sony DSC-T series in spec but the design is far more traditional, more rounded in appearance with a lens that isn’t flush against the body. Spec wise they range from 6 megapixel up to 8.1 MP. Other than the W30 which has a 2 inch LCD, they all come with a 2.5 inch LCD, high ISO, Carl Zeisse 3x optical zoom and the Sony super STAMINA battery life. Cyber-shot S Series, Cyber-shot P Series, Cyber-shot N Series These are a slightly older range and while very Sony in their look, are distinctly a slightly older design. Again spec wise they have the standard 6 – 8 megapixel range and 2.5 inch LCD but the look is more 90s than naughties. Cyber-shot R1 and H1 and H2 Series These three cameras look like DSLR cameras and are very large and chunky. They also have many of the features you’d expect from an SLR such as manual exposure controls but come with static, fixed lenses rather than the interchangeable lens of the Sony D100 range.
