I Have A Panasonic Viera Tv, Will Any Home Theatre System Be Compatible With It.. Help ,please, Thank You

I did have the Panasonic sound system to go with the TV, but it broke down after only a year, not knowing anything about electronics, I would like to know if I can use an alternative system...& if it will just plug into the Tv, as did the old one.. Please help...
