Choosing Format To Write Dvds For Club Distribution

Mike Lowing would like to know the answer to the following question, if you have a suggestion then please post a reply:
I have produced a video for circulation to members of a club. I can only write DVD+RW in my PC but I gather that, like the other formats, this is only likely to play on 'most' DVD players ie not 'all'. How is it that some DVDs (e.g freebies) seem to play happily in everything? Is the only way forward for me to ask members what format they want and to produce different versions accordingly?
